Our Ancestors by Chris Greeley

Place a pin in a location where your ancestors are from (ancestors can be biological or chosen, personally known or never met). Then in that note, explain one way the wisdom of your ancestors has helped you become a more resilient person. What ideas have your ancestors passed down to you that give you strength, confidence, or reassurance? See pins dropped by different teachers for examples.

Growing up with a single mom, we didn't always the most stuff. I remember every Christmas, my mom would always make sure we donated to Family Forward, a local organization helping a lot of single mothers. We would donate a Christmas tree to a family as well as old toys and furniture. I always find that in times of stress and worry and hardship, that giving to others helps me feel better. So I've sent little care packages to friends with notes, and coffee, and books, to let people know I am thinking of them, that they're loved, and wishing them the best in these hard times.

I think about how in Ecuadorian culture, sharing food is a way of showing love and building community.

My mom grew up in a tiny pueblo in Guatemala called Gualan. I remember visiting my grandparents there a handful of times as a kid but I don’t think that I learned to fully appreciate it, or the family history I have there, until I was older. Now that I am an adult, I love digging through old photos and listening to the stories that come along with them.

One of my favorite photos of my grandfather is this old black and white picture of him and a committee from the town turning on a giant switch that gave the town electricity for the first time. He was a dedicated and caring man that was always thinking about the town and how to make it better. I remember hearing stories about how he inherited land and once owned most of Gualan. However, instead of keeping it for himself, he decided to give or donate a lot of it to people that were in need. That was the type of man he was. When he cared about something or someone, he cared with his whole heart. That sense of wanting to take care of your own was then passed down to my mom, who came to the United States in her early 20s to help support her family back in Guatemala after a huge earthquake destroyed large parts of the country.

And then there was my grandmother. One of my favorite pictures of her is actually a half of a painted portrait. The other half, which was my grandfather sitting next to her, was cut out after they had a fight one day. During their fight, she told him she didn’t want to have a picture with him by her side. She’s was a strong and powerful woman who raised 9 children and stayed married to the love of her life, even when they drove each other crazy. She raised my mom to be just as strong and I like to think that I get my strength from the both of them. She didn’t have a perfect life but no matter what obstacles came her way, she persevered and fought for what she cared about.

These stories of strength in family and the support we provide for each other have always been important in my life. These stories live within me.

He came to America when things got hard to make sure his family would have a good life. This taught me resilience. I realized it is important not to give up for yourself but also for your family in the future. I feel reassured that I will always have a family to rely on when I can look back and see how my family has stayed together for hundreds of years. I’m excited to see the future of my family and can’t believe some day I will be someone else’s ancestors. They survived the great potato famine when Ireland almost ran out of food so it gives me some hope that I will survive Coronavirus.

My family is Catholic so we believe in la virgencita (Virgin Mary). We also believe that’s she’s with us and takes care of all her children. Whenever there is a problem we pray to a virgencita, in our house or at a church to tell our problems and have faith that they will be fixed.

One thing passed down is my love of books. My Grandad passed down his love for reading down to my mom, and passed it down to me. I love reading mystery books because of my mom. I love fact, fiction to graphic novels. I’m constantly making lists of books I want for my mini library. I have around 200 books.

My god father is from Bahia, he taught me many things he taught me to be strong and to never let anyone push you down he basically treated me like a princess. I was always so attached to his cooking and the fascination it gave me and inspired me to explore the Brazilian cuisine more and more as i grew up i think he passed down strength and his cooking skills of course he passed down many things i wish he were still in contact with my family to teach me more sometimes, but we don’t always get a happily ever after. His wisdom has helped me cope with the pandemic by always reminding myself to stay strong, and have fun like he always told me.
