Characteristics of Altruism

There are some obvious characteristics of an altruistic person. They are first and foremost selfless. They have much concern for the well being of others; they put others´ happiness before their own. In a way, they feel better making others feel good, rather than receiving ´good´ things from other people. Sometimes, this behavior benefits other people even at their own expense, and they´re fine with it because it makes them happy.

Altruistic Behavior may have evolved for many reasons. One being that this behavior is more desirable, therefore someone will become more altruistic to attract a better mate or please their partner. This can even be seen as natural selection; the people Someone may also be more altruistic as a parental figure. As our minds have expanded, we have learned that it is better for a child to grow up with altruistic parents because they will have everything they need. Also, altruism may have become a more desirable trait as people learned to bargain. We may see altruistic people as our allies, and stick with them rather than going against them. This benefits the altruistic person. So, over time, altruistic behavior has simply adapted to a more likable characteristic, therefore causing more people to live in this manner.

As a parental figure, or even a peer, animals see that it is equally, if not more important to help others rather than helping yourself. For example, many species help clean eachother off rather than themselves. This is an altruistic behavior.

I think that social behaviors such as altruistic behavior are very important in running society. I think it is very important that we analyze how and why people do things the way they do. These social behaviors, such as defense, aggression, compassion, and more, keep our social world in tact. Without these individual behaviors, there would be no structure for our society and how we as living beings do things.
