In April of 1911, France sent troops to Morocco to establish a protectorate there. Tensions between various European powers, most notably France and Germany, over the status of Morocco had caused the First Moroccan Crisis five years earlier, souring relations between the two powers. After taking control of Morocco, France was able to placate Germany with territorial concessions in Central Africa, but British prime minister David Lloyd George, fearing increasing German naval power, vocally criticized Germany for their aggressiveness, causing the deterioration of the already tense relationship between Germany and Great Britain.
