He was an American industrialist, tycoon, riverboat captain, businessman and entrepreneur. He managed many businesses and he also invested in numerous business ventures. By his late forties he had already amassed a great fortune.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Charles Tyson Yerkes was born in June 25, 1837 and passed away on December 29, 1905. He put together companies that built Chicago's mass-transit system. He started as a clerk in Philadelphia and by 1862 he was able to buy his own banking house. At 16 he was an errand boy in a dry -goods store from there he developed rapidly into an adept salesman. He later went to Chicago in 1856 and was hired by the mercantile house of Cooley. Levi Ziegler Leiter one of his junior partners joined the merchandising firm of Potter Palmer.
