"Outside, the sparrows were still chirping, and as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike" (Plath 13). In this quote, Millicent sees the sparrows standing close together. They were chirping continuously, and Millicent noticed how they all looked exactly alike. Nothing made them different from each other, and she couldn't see anything that made them different.

"..there came a melodic fluting, quite wild and sweet, and she knew that it must be the song of the heather birds as they went wheeling and gliding against wide blue horizons through vast spaces of air, their wings flashing quick and purple in the bright sun" (Plath 14). Millicent hears the heather birds flying as she is about to confront the sorority.

The sparrows are a symbol of unity and uniformity. Not only do they represent the quantity of groups and the strength in numbers, but they also represent the lack of individual creativity. In the story "Initiation", the flock of sparrows tie into the sorority. Like the sparrows, the sorority is popular, commonly known, and most importantly, they're all the same. There was no way you could distinguish one sparrow bird from the other. The sparrows fly in the same direction, in the same flock, and they have limited freedom. Millicent compares the sparrow birds to the sorority and it's restricted way of living. If she joined the sorority, she would be confined to living the same lifestyle as the rest of the girls. Millicent would be plain, dull, and boring.

The heather birds symbolize Millicent's inner desire to be herself apart from everyone else in the sorority. In the short story "Initiation," Millicent starts having doubts because of Beverly's personality towards her: cold and unwelcoming. The heather birds she sees nearing the end of the story reminded her of how it feels to be free and not locked inside some sort of group to try and become one of the popular kids. Unlike the heather birds Millicent sees at the end of the story, the sparrows are all grouped together and are exactly alike. The heather birds fly in all sorts of directions and not all together. Millicent realized that she doesn't have to be one of the sorority girls in order to fit in. She can just be herself.
