The Nanday Parakeet was originally from the central part of South America, specifically from Brazil down to Argentina.

Predators of the Nanday Parakeet include eagles, snakes, hawks, and bats. Prey include nuts, vegetation, fruits, seeds, and berries. Nanday’s usually compete with song birds for resources. Tree cavities are a resource for the birds habitat, but it is a limited resource. Their reseources also include their food, which is nuts, seeds, and berries. Nanday’s also can adapt to whatever resources are there to survive. The limiting factor of the Nanday’s is their habitat, the tree cavities. The limitation of these trees can significantly decrease their population, causing death, which can lead to extinction. Nanday Parakeets have a parasitism symbiotic relationship with screech owls, woodpeckers, and American kestrels by nesting and invading their habitats in the tree cavities. This harms the other species because their habitats are invaded and harmed by being in their nests.

In Florida, the Nanday Parakeet has invaded the Tampa Bay Area and along the southeastern coast. The Nanday’s were first introduced by an accidental escape, owners of the parakeets intentionally freed them because they were loud, and by natural disasters. 3 effects that the Nanday has had on the Florida ecosystem and community is that it fights for food with other birds which can cause natural selection and may lead to death, they displace other birds from their nests, which is parasitism that can harm the other birds, and the parakeets can nest on power poles, which impacts equipment for the power and its utilities.

Our group thinks the best way to control the Nanday Parakeet is to target trapping and nest removal. By doing this it will reduce the populations numbers significantly. Since it prevents further breeding by removing the nests. This method in our opinion would be the easiest because by using trained bird trappers they would be able to do it safely. It’s best to remove the nest in non- breeding season so that they avoid harming the chicks. By using baited traps or mist nets. For this process you would need permits so we are not breaking any laws when dealing with this.

The materials that we would need would be baited cage traps:, which are large wire cages with spring doors. Drop traps: frame covered with mesh or netting that drops remotely when birds enter the baited area. Mist Nets: fine mesh nets strung between poles to capture birds in flight.

Other materials we would need would be baited area, crates , towels gloves, id tags or bands, binoculars, and flashlights.

We would need permits since most states require permits to trap or disturb nest of wild birds. We would also need trained personnel for handling birds especially with trapping them.
