The shooter's name was Burr and killed Hamilton during a duel. The men had been long feuding and finally challenged each other to a duel. Hamilton died from his wounds after the duel on July 11, 1804. Hamilton disliked Burr, as he thought he was a dangerous opportunist. Witnesses from the Duel claimed Jefferson purposely missed when he shot. Burr then took a shot and hit Hamilton in his side, thinking that Hamilton had tried to kill him.

However this tax was unpopular and an uprising began. This is known as the whiskey rebellion.  Farmers who made their own whiskey tarred and feathered tax collectors. The rebellion lasted three years and forced George Washington to enforce the law.
