Laurel Hilbert, a 17 year old blind man, came to the United States in 2013. He was born in Syria, but his family moved to Saudi Arabia and when Laurel lived there, as a disabled man and a foreigner, he felt as if he was "a burden on society". So, he applied to learn English in the United States. He came on a student visa in 2013 and was then granted asylum in 2014. However, when he arrived in Los Angeles in 2013 he was homeless and couldn’t speak English. But, he was taken in by a family who also spoke Arabic, who enrolled him in school and connected him with a lawyer who helped him apply for asylum. He went through a terrifying interview process, where he detailed the fear that he felt if he had to return back in order to receive asylum. After his English became strong, he decided to move to New York. He got a job and his green card in 2015, in 2020 he'll be eligible to become a citizen.

The American Immigration policy affected Syrian refugees because it reduced admissions. Many were against the policy.
“The message we’ve been sending to the administration is: you’re basically undercutting your entire religious freedom agenda because you’re shutting the door on persecuted people,” said Jenny Yang, vice president of advocacy and policy at World Relief, a Baltimore-based refugee resettlement organization. (Washington Post)

Syrians who immigrated before the crisis are doing good, learning English, owning homes, having good jobs, and starting up businesses at an impressive rate. However, Syrians also had to immigrate to the United States to seek refuge during the war. When Syrian refugees arrived they had to go through an extreme vetting process, and they were given housing where other Syrian communities were large to help integrate them into society comfortably.
