Cost of maintenance
There are certain aspects of cost of maintaining a fleet that fluctuate. As the airplane grows older, certain systems begin to develop faults. This can leave an operation wondering if costly fixes adding up are better than renewing a fleet.

New procurement costs have an initial barrier especially if the new fleet is different than the ones previously used by the operator. Some of the additional costs include, tools and methods, training personnel and human errors due to a lack of experience on that perticular fleet type.

Schedule and reliability issues are a considerable threat, airplanes only make money when they are flying for thier intended use. Operating older aircraft can often mean that a company has to have atleast two back up aircraft's on standby should one fail. This costs adds up over time idle grounded aircraft due to robbed or pooled parts.

Conversely newer airplanes can be dicely to put in the line up as reliability and compatibility with crew is not guaranteed.
Maintenance Jobs take longer times to finish and can lead to delays in the initial flights after integration.

Every dacade or so, operators experience a shift in most profitable fleet to operate a certain route driven by either a rise or fall in demand by passengers. Other times its a disruptive new technology offering serious fuel saving and seats per mile coverage. It makes it challenging for operators to predict how faithfully they can be to seeing a life cycle term through.
