In 3rd grade, I was so proud of myself when I memorized all the times tables. Over the summer when my mom gave me a math workbook, I even found that fun. In 7th grade, I enjoyed learning Algebra because I was good at memorizing equations. But then during the rest of middle school and throughout high school, I started struggling in my Math classes. I couldn't just get by with just memorizing, and I didn't really understand the purpose of why we were even learning Math or how Math could be applied to my life. I completely turned away from Math. Numbers would hurt my head, making me anxious, and break out in cold sweat. I still remember getting hit in the hand with a ruler when I made mistakes reciting my nine timetables. This all changed in 7th grade when I met Mr. Habib. He didn't make Math class fun, but in his class, I felt successful. For the first time in my life, Math made sense. I still had to work hard in the classroom and at home. I even went to his classroom during lunchtime for extra help and got a tutor because I wanted to continue succeeding in Math class. Same for high school. In college I took a calculus class and it was very hard for me but the professor had "office hours" and I went and had one-on-one help with him to try to do my best. It helped! I found math so complicated and unnecessary to my life. I only paid attention to math just so to pass and completely forget about it, since I did not see its usefulness. Fast forward to college, I was forced to take all kinds of math such as Statistics, Pre-Cal and Calculus 1 & 2.  Surprisingly, I was able to pass these classes with the help of my friend Elias and Youtube. Growing up as an athlete numbers mattered in regards to the score of the game and angles mattered in calculating the right form to shoot a basketball or the proper form to glide over a hurdle. I used math to calculate my shooting and scoring averages, which helped me foresee possible outcomes for future games. My coaches were able to support in collecting data to help me improve my skills. As you can see math isn’t just used inside a classroom. It is a life skill that can be applied in real world situations, especially when it comes to sports. Math is used in sports for everything: from calculating scores to average points, scoring goals, winning scores, creating leaderboards, developing strategies, and calculating probability. So, if you are someone who has a tough time with Math, try to see how you apply math into your daily life whether if you are an artist, someone who plays an instrument, someone who enjoys cooking or even knitting. 
]]> 2023-03-08 15:51:04 UTC https://padlet.com/khsieh12/t55y28upyecbjfak/wish/2508820488 Mr. McVeigh's Math Story https://padlet.com/khsieh12/t55y28upyecbjfak/wish/2509489115 I always loved playing sports but I also loved watching sports.  Unfortunately, growing up I did not have cable TV and could not watch most of the Knicks, Yankees or Ranger games.  The best way to consume sports and follow the teams and players I loved was to watch the evening news sports report or read the box scores in the newspaper.  It felt like hours that would I could get lost in all the statistics, records and standings.  Who was the scoring leader in the NBA, who was leading MLB in batting average, or what team was leading the eastern conference.  It was all so simple, just black and white print, but I remember being so incredibly engaged in every number.  If I had only continued to be obsessed with statistics as analytics has taken over professional sports and mathematics have revolutionized all sports earning high paying positions in the front office.

I was SO worried about "the math part" of my certification exams (I had to take 2+7-4 exams) that I bought multiple study guides. I re-learned how to do multi-step equations, I watched Khan Academy videos, I watched YouTube... The math move shifted my other classes and I got to know a group of girls I would have never been friends with (Non AP/Regents).   We still keep in touch and yes my math grade improved. So math = new friendships!
