Case study of the role of WHO(World health organization)in effecting global health and environment through its involvement in Botulism in France

Globalization is essentially about people and nations connecting with each other in varies aspects such as economic, cultural, political. According to Heywood(2014),he believes that the world is closely connected, and it is more integrated and more interdependent.People over long distances may also have close connections, for example, economic growth in one region may affect changes in the lives of people in another. Referring to the concept of globalization, health concerns is definitely considered as an important aspect since it has been frequently mentioned to be one of the most significant issues in the world that need to be solved.

According to this definition, therefore, one organisation that is an agent of globalisation is the World Health Organisation , and its mission is to expand health coverage(World Health Organization ,2024).Furthermore, WHO encourage Healthier lives—from pregnancy care to old age. They aim to solve health problems and providing solutions and oversight. For example,on September 12, 2023, local public health officials in France discovered ten probable botulism cases, one of which resulted in death. As of September 14, 2023, the French National IHR focal point told WHO that 15 suspected botulism cases, including one fatality, had been recorded in Bordeaux and Ile-de-France.Under WHO supervision, food and serum samples of the potential cause of the virus have been sent to research institutes in France and the source of the disease has been identified(WHO,2023). The local health department then held a conference to publicize the notification and issued recommendations to raise awareness of symptoms and treatment for health care workers. The WHO made a risk assessment and issued a public advisory calling attention to how food is stored and cooked to kill bacteria(WHO,2023).In the World Health Organization's Statement and Overview of food safety, they mention that food safety, nutrition and food security are closely related(WHO,no publication date,para1). Unsafe food causes disease and malnutrition and affects the food supply chain(WHO,no publication date,para3). The unhealthy food supply chain will affect people's physical health and social medical burden, resulting in social instability. The World Health Organization's call for food safety advice is very important in light of the bacterial food poisoning incident in France. Who achieves this through the implementation of the WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety (2022-2030); Monitoring the global burden of foodborne diseases and supporting countries in burden estimates; Conduct a comprehensive assessment through the FAO/WHO Food Control System Assessment Tool to support stronger national food control systems(WHO,no publication date,para3).

In globalization, rapid urbanization is often mentioned, with cities and regions seeking constant development. Under this foundation, the food supply faces new challenges. The WHO's recommendations are to ensure the high quality and safety of food while ensuring the speed and stability of food supply(Regnier-Davies and Scott, 2017).Supervision of the safety of the food supply chain has also proved to be important in the context of globalization, and the WHO is working to implement supervision and control in different parts of the world(Kruse, 1999).This ensures the fastest identification of outbreaks or the least risk to humans and the spread of the disease itself. Although the WHO has made many contributions at the level of regulation and advice, the supervision of food safety cannot be implemented in every corner of the world due to the huge population size and dispersed population distribution. This is a potential crisis because even though the WHO has many requirements and recommendations for disease prevention and food safety, they do not cover every region and every food. Therefore, in the global food safety issue, countries and regions need to strengthen communication, strengthen cooperation and supervision to ensure food safety and people's health, so as to lay the foundation for regional development(Lineback., Pirlet, Van Der Kamp, and Wood, 2009).All in all, in the process of global food safety, even though WHO has made outstanding contributions, there are still some parts that need to be further improved.

References:

Heywood, A.
Case study of the role of IOC(International Olympic Committee) in effecting the Global sports and cultural exchange through its involvement in Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Sports globalization is an important part of globalization and an inevitable trend of sports development. Sports globalization transcends national boundaries and regions, breaks the barriers of regional environment and culture, and enables sports of different regions and nations to integrate and absorb each other with rich personalities, and develop into a new world cultural model (Trosien, 2013).As an important international organization to promote the development of world sports, the International Olympic Organization is a well-known organization of the Olympic Games. Its main responsibility is to promote the development of human sport and to promote the Olympic Movement throughout the world(International Olympic Committee ,2021,para1).The most important physical sporting event in the near future is the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris. While promoting the Olympic Games, IOC strives to practice Olympism, safeguard the world people's yearning for sports, and strive to complete the holding of this sports competition.

The IOC will implement a number of measures at the Paris Games to ensure the success of the event and the development of sport and culture. For example, the International Olympic Committee approved the addition of some new sports to the Paris Games, such as breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing and so on(International Olympic Committee ,2021,Paris 2024).The move is aimed at attracting younger audiences and promoting new types of sports. While promoting the development of new sports, the IOC also optimizes and adjusts the existing Olympic sports to improve the fairness, enjoyment and competitive level of the competition. On this basis, the International Olympic Committee seeks to develop and spread the cultural dimension of these Games. For example, by promoting the Olympic project and its sportsmanship everywhere, more people are encouraged to participate and become part of sports. In particular, the IOC wants to influence the perception and understanding of sport among the younger generation and to develop their interest and habits in sport(Lopes, and Delaplace,2023). In the opening and closing ceremonies, not only the French culture and art will be disseminated, but also the integration of world cultures, reflecting the Olympic spirit and the spiritual development of human civilization. The IOC worked closely with the Paris Organizing Committee to plan events such as the Olympic Festival and many community cultural events. It covers concerts, art performances, exhibitions and more, encouraging local residents and visitors to participate and providing a rich cultural experience. The IOC also invites artists from many countries to create works of art for the Olympic Games, showcasing cultures from all over the world(International Olympic Committee ,2021,Paris 2024).These measures will undoubtedly make the Paris Olympic Games a great success, and people all over the world will be able to enjoy the great integration of sports culture and nationalities(Doustaly ,2023).

The cultural festivals and Olympic art programs held by the International Olympic Committee during the Paris Olympic Games undoubtedly provide a platform for cultural display and a window for cultural exchange(Lefort, 2024).Through cooperation with global media, the Paris Olympic Games will also be a global live digital broadcast, so that people around the world can feel the culture of different regions, and the enthusiasm of the French people, further strengthening the cultural identity. But I think there's still a lot of room for improvement. For example, the coverage of cultural activities can be expanded, such as increasing social participation. For example, in and around the event venues, through community and local tourism activities to attract more visitors. On the Internet, more virtual cultural exchange activities can also be held through digital platforms, breaking through regional time and language restrictions, so that more people can participate in the Olympic Games. All in all, it is hoped that through continuous improvement, IOC can further promote the development and exchange of global culture through the Paris Olympic Games and contribute to the development of globalization.

‌

References

Trosien, G.
