The on the website Accord, the article Understanding the Recruitment of Child Soldiers in Africa by Anne-Lynn Dudenhoefer states "They can be psychologically manipulated through a deliberate programme of starvation, thirst, fatigue, voodoo, indoctrination, beatings, the use of drugs and alcohol, and even sexual abuse to render them compliant to the new norms of child soldiering." From such harsh conditions in the military camps, children are the most vulnerable and easiest to be controlled. Not to mention, mental illnesses form easily, creating an even more unstable mindset for the child, prone to getting manipulated. Children are also easier to convince and control, and often require little or no payment, making them targets for terror groups and militias.”
Child soldiers join because they think they are going to have a better life. As well as have people protect them. But, in reality, they do not know what they are getting themselves into.

But the military has other jobs that don't include becoming a soldier, which doesn't include as much trauma. Some roles are cooks, messengers, spies, etc. While it's true that their jobs vary, that doesn't mean that it has any less effect on them. Not to mention, some of the 'jobs', are bad too, such as sex slaves and suicide bombers. Some are injured and have to live with disabilities for the rest of their lives."
