The Battle of Okinawa was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa.

The Allies were planing to use Okinawa as a base of operations for its future invasion of Japan. 

Japan had been useing the island to hold planes and equipment for suicided missions.

A Marine Vought F4U-1D Corsair launched wing mounted rockets at Japanese targets on Okinawa. The Americans were using Okinawa's airfields to support operations on the island.

Japanese Strategy

The Japanese lay in waiting for the American forces, prepared for an invasion, and prepared to fight until the last man was standing. They planned to just defend the Ryukyus, but knew they would not win. Therefore, for every Japanese soldier lost, he must take out ten Americans.

Okinawa Island is the largest of the Okinawa prefecture, and fifth largest of Japan's islands. It is about 463 square miles and in easy flight distance of the mainland. Being fought on ground, on the water, and in the air, the battle is the one of the bloodiest of the war.

One of the main reasons the Allies wanted Okinawa was for the bombs. They needed a place to hold the bombs that were going to be launched to Japan.

During the fight, over 100,000 Japanese lives were lost, and over 50,000 Ally casualties.
