Victor: Q1. What is the poems tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poems ironic?

The poems tone is sad and longing for acceptance. Words that reveal the tone are like " This is my letter to the world that never wrote to me-" "judge tenderly of me.". The poem is ironic because Emily Dickinson was often known as a recluse because she never really left her house but she wants to be judged tenderly and she says she never got a letter but how could she is she never went outside.

Yes there are symbols in the poem when Emily Dickinson says Hands I cannot see. It means that when shes dead she wont be able to see people reading her poems. they aren't universal symbols they are from the context of the poem.

4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?(Austin Hong)

In this poem, it uses personification by giving the world and nature a human characteristic. For example, "This is my letter to the World That never wrote to Me". This is personification because she says that this is a world that never wrote to her. This gives the poem a more negative than positive tone.

The message and theme that Emily Dickinson is trying to portay is that this poem is a reach out to the world. She was a recluse all of her life but wants to gain acceptance through her poetry. In the text says, "Judge tenderly-of Me", meaning she wants to be seen but is afraid of being harshly judged.

Emily Dickinson was always obsessed with writing about death and people dying. She also was a recluse so she rarely went outside of her house. she always referred to death as not being able to see. So in the poem she says "Her massage is committed to the hands I cannot see.". She is referring to someone in the future reading her poems after she died. She also talks about wanting to be judged tenderly and that we are all going to die.
