1. Blurred lines between the role of the parent/guardian and the role of schools in a child's education.
2. Kindergarten is the new first grade. Focus is on rigorous instruction as early as possible which is contradictory to much of the research on early childhood development. Work at this developmental stage should be play-based.
4. Increased rigor in academic instruction without giving students ample opportunity to build an operating system of skills necessary to function both socially and academically.
5. The majority of a school's rating is based on one single test which ignores all other well-known factors that affect student performance. Schools start to teach to the test instead of teaching the whole child.
6. The arts and physical education take a backseat to traditional core instruction, although it is well-supported that quality arts programs can lead to greater academic performance and increasing physical education/recess can decrease behavior and attention issues which affect academic performance.
7. Schools are increasingly diverse yet are increasingly standardizing curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This seems counterproductive.
8. The answer is always more instead of re-thinking our overall approach. Kids are struggling with reading? Make the ELA block longer. Can't "cover" all the material in the course of the school day? Make the day longer. Yet, the results are often the same or not significantly different.
9. Schools push to use technology frequently. It's not always used purposefully.
