The Open Door Mentorship was an absolute game changer for us and our practice.
Even though we had already been operating for over a year before we started working with Heather and Aimee, their insight and guidance helped us troubleshoot issues we were experiencing, but also reassured us that we were on the right track in other areas! The team calls and training helped solidify our team and ensured we were all on the same page regarding goals and metrics. Our practice has been an invaluable addition to our organization—expanding the impact of our mission to include pets and people outside of our shelter services, while also producing a sustainable source of revenue. We're still using ODVC mentorship materials (daily financial spreadsheet for the win!) every day. I cannot recommend them highly enough!”

Amber Kostoff, CAWA Executive Director
MCPAWS Veterinary Hospital in McCall, ID

Open Door came at the perfect time for us at the Louisiana SPCA. We had been through years of significant deficits in our Community Clinic, and Open Door gave us the tools to implement a break-even model. Their program provided us with the tools to analyze and measure data, from daily goals and no show rates to daily expenses. This data was critical in order to help us identify problem areas and set goals. Their process also helped us implement ways to help our clients afford care. After years of heavily subsidizing care, we were able to implement payment tools for our clients to sustain our operations. "
—Jessie Aris, LASPCA Chief Financial Officer

We love working with the team at Open Door!
They have been so helpful and there for us every step of the way. We are so happy to be able to provide quality care and options to pet parents in our community. Pet care can often be an unexpected expense that prevents a lot of owners from being able to do the best thing for their pet, and giving them the opportunity to do so fills our hearts!”
Christen Skaer, DVM
Skaer Veterinary Clinic

Thank you for the veterinary fund. The care Duke and our family received at Dayton Humane Veterinary was God sent. Duke is just not a family pet but is a member of our family. We have had him for 5 years and he has been such a vital support for my autistic son jaydan. Duke is a very curious and active dog and tried to escape out metal chainlink fence and unfortunately cut a very deep gash in his leg I did what I could at home to try and take care of the wound but it just kept bleeding I called multiple emergency vets but no one would care for him because I am unfortunately going through a financial hardship after several days I was given the number for Dayton Humane veterinary and they were my last hope. They not only got Duke in same day but they were very understanding of my financial situation and not only took care of the injury but they also neutered him and gave him his vaccines at no cost to me which was such huge blessing to me and my family duke is now healthy and enjoying his life

My name is Sydney Szumowicz, and I am the UF Graduate student that Dr. Terry Spencer mentioned to you about the scholarship for the financially friendly practices course on opendoor! I wanted to reach out to you to thank you very much for the scholarship, as I found the course extremely interesting and eye-opening, especially regarding the financial options available at opendoor clinics. It also helped me tremendously with gathering information for my capstone project, which research is turning out very well with! I love everything that opendoor is doing, and I thank you so much again for the scholarship to give me the opportunity to connect and learn about opendoor and the information in this course. I also am applying to vet school this year, and I cannot wait to learn more about open door through externship opportunities or possibly other opportunities after vet school, as I would love to work with opendoor in the future and want to learn more firsthand once I become a veterinarian. Once again, thank you so much for the scholarship as it was so interesting and helpful not only to me, but for my capstone project. I loved the course and I hope to learn more and possibly work with opendoor in the future during/after vet school!

Thank you again,

Sydney Szumowicz

Dreams for Change is incredibly grateful to the Open Door Veterinary Collective for the $250 Uber grant, which supports our Safe Sleeping program clients and their beloved pets. This funding has allowed nearly 10 riders to transport their animals to veterinary appointments and other pet needs. One client surrendered his dog and expressed gratitude for that final car ride, which even included a stop at Starbucks for a pup cup.

Another client Linda found housing and needed to have her dog Solider vaccinated before moving in. With this grant we were able to help Linda stop by the vet clinic and move in all in one trip. She was immensely grateful for the opportunity to both secure housing and care for her pet in their new environment.

With this grant, Dreams for Change has been able to address another barrier that many unsheltered pet owners face. We now have the ability to continue using Uber to assist clients when we cannot find volunteers to provide transportation.

"Our small, rural animal shelter embarked on opening a veterinary practice to provide better care for the animals in our shelter while also offering affordable, accessible veterinary services to our community. Located in New Hampshire, we were limited by state law until January 2023, when a legislative change allowed shelters like ours to provide more than just vaccines and spay/neuter services to public clients. This change gave us the opportunity to launch Valley Animal Hospital.

As we worked through the final stages of opening, we met with the Executive Director of MSPCA in Massachusetts, who introduced us to Open Door Vet Collective. That connection proved invaluable. After reaching out to Aimee, she encouraged us to apply for a grant through Maddie’s Fund, which provided crucial support for our project.

Running an animal hospital—let alone building one from the ground up—was uncharted territory for us. Although we had laid much of the groundwork before connecting with Aimee and Heather, their guidance was instrumental in refining our plans and ensuring they were realistic and aligned with our goals. Their expertise connected us with resources we would have otherwise struggled to find, saving us significant time and effort.

Beyond the initial setup, their ongoing support has been just as impactful. Their monthly analysis of our revenue and day-to-day operations has given us confidence that we are on the right track. They are an incredibly knowledgeable and supportive team, deeply invested in seeing our hospital succeed.

I highly recommend Open Door Vet Collective to anyone looking to establish a more accessible veterinary practice. Thanks to their help, our community has embraced Valley Animal Hospital, and we hope to see more practices adopt this inclusive approach to veterinary care."

Thank you so much for all you have done for us, we really couldn't do it without you!
