The requirements for this job is having a personal training a CPR certification. Also, including a high school and bachelor's degree. The audience intended is someone who has had experience with personal training and fitness related activities. There is a physical requirement because it is a personal training job, so I have to be able to lift a certain amount of weight. The channel for this job listing is Indeed.

Rhetorical Appeals Strategy:

I would use ethos to appeal to this employer by demonstrating my credibility and expertise. I would show my certificates for personal training and show them my experience in this job field. Since the job requires a bachelor's and high school degree, I'd show my degrees and my education. Showing my previous success in personal training would be necessary as it would increase my ethos in this management position. Personal training involves multiple clients, so I would appeal to ethos by showcasing my client's positive feedback on their training experience with me. I would create a positive environment within the business and show team-building skills. Overall, ethos would be the best appeal due to the job listing being mostly credential-focused.

Summary

In "The Danger of a Single Story," a TED Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, she explains her life growing up in Africa, and being literate from a young age. After leaving Africa, she learns that many people including herself have create their own biased perspectives on other people. She explains that people need to be aware of other people's experiences before they create picture of what they think it is.

Reflection

Since she has read a lot about America and Britain, I assumed she was probably going to leave her country in Africa. Also, she was very smart at a young age so she would go to a place where more opportunities are. In my second reading, I was able to see more details of the story that I hadn't seen previously. One thing I saw was that she created her own biased opinion about people in here home country, and not just foreigners. The main claims is that stories shape our perspectives on the world. When we only see one side of the story though, it can lead to biased perspectives. One rhetorical appeal I saw was pathos. She felt sad when she though Fide's family was just poor. She didn't realize that his family had other great attributes. The theme strengthened the story more than the appeals, because this wasn't the most argumentative story. This story related to me, because I used to stereotype other people. It diverged, because I have never visited a foreign country before. I don't have any questions related to this story.

"Find More Ways to be an Outsider" by Arthur C Brooks

The central idea of this passage is the troubles and benefits of being an outsider. Being an outsider has many tough challenges, but it can positively benefit personal growth. I agree with his claim because I feel like many people want to stay in their bubble and not deal with change (including me). Instead, we need to experience change and get out of our own comfort spaces. Brooks's persuasion is evident in the passage, as he uses a logos form of argument about being an outsider. Arthur gives the evidence that being an outsider doesn't harm a person's societal relationships at all, but instead improves it. Arthur gives clear evidence throughout his article and most of the evidence is appealed to logos. One of his strongest points is that the next generation of legal immigrants is better at adapting to the world around them. The weak point is when the author tries to make it seem like being a foreigner is the best idea for everybody. Arthur assumes that every challenge against an outsider is temporary and that everybody can fully adjust to being an outsider. Arthur uses the reputational ethos of his circumstances because he was once a foreigner and has the experience. He also uses pathos by sharing his personal experiences of being an outsider and the different things he had to go through. The author uses other persuasion techniques like analogies. He compared spending time as a outsider to a triathlon, and a less fun vacation.

Thesis: In the Article "Find More Ways to be an Outsider" by Arthur C Brooks, the author makes an effective argument by using his personal experience, extensive research and persuasive appeals to support the idea of embracing being an outsider.

Two research methods that I have learned and will use in the future are lateral reading and advanced search engine techniques. Lateral reading involves checking the credibility of a source by comparing it to others. The term "lateral reading" comes from the practice of having many tabs or other sources open alongside your main source. This method helps provide new perspectives on the topic and narrows down your options. The second method I learned is the advanced search engine, a feature Google offers to filter and refine search results for more accuracy. One of its best features is the ability to choose specific domains. For example, if I want results only from ".org" websites, I can enter that command and receive more relevant results.

Lateral reading will change the way I research by helping me find more trustworthy sources. I usually don't check the credibility or trustworthiness of my sources, but learning about this method has changed my approach. I now realize how many untrustworthy sources are out there, and I want to filter through them using this method. One of the most valuable aspects of lateral reading is uncovering an author’s biases. If I want to learn about a political topic, lateral reading helps me understand the central view and avoid being swayed by biases. The advanced search engine is also a major game changer. There have been many times when I am searching for something specific, only to be bombarded with irrelevant websites. When looking for PDFs of books or plays like The Crucible by Arthur Miller for school, I can use advanced search to quickly find the best results and sift through unwanted sites. Both of these research methods have changed the way I approach research and I will definitely be using them in the future.

The poem "My Papa’s Waltz" by Theodore Roethke portrays a playful familial bond between a father and son. This bond appears playful because of the word "romped." The word "romped" simply means to play roughly, often referring to children. This suggests that the father and son are engaging in playful activity rather than something more sinister. Additionally, the lines "We romped until the pans/ Slid from the kitchen shelf; " (Roethke 5-6) show that their interaction is not one-sided, as they are both participating in the romping. The relationship between the father and son also seems very close. Toward the end of the poem, the son is described as "Still clinging to your shirt" (Roethke 16). The son is holding onto his father and not the other way around, which suggests affection rather than fear. The term "waltzed/waltzing" throughout the poem suggests both a lively movement and the idea of being led. In the line "Then waltzed me off to bed" (Roethke 15), the poet illustrates a child being gently led to bed. Similarly, the line "Such waltzing was not easy" (Roethke 4) might seem negative at first, but it actually suggests a father who cares for his son and tries to lead him and even though it’s not always easy. This poem is open to interpretation, with different readers seeing it in different ways. Through my analysis, I believe it portrays a playful, familial bond between a father and son.

Work Cited:

Roethke, Theodore. “My Papa's Waltz.” Poetry Foundation, https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43330/my-papas-waltz.
