The Mystery Box Activity

Apparatus;
6 boxes with unknown items inside. Group discussion sheet. 6 post-its for making best guess.
Method;
2 minutes per group on each box. Write down all features that can be identified. At the end of the 2 minutes, write down a best guess. Move the box to the next group. When all boxes have been analysed, share learning on the board.
What skills did you use?
What did you think was in the box?
Post you best guess on the board. Where there is agreement, highlight it. Where there is not agreement, use their observation sheet to stimulate debate.
Finally, do not open the box, scientist must rely on their observations and hypothesis. Where there is disagreement, research continues..

Orientation: How can I increase the power that a magnet attracts a small iron car?
Concept: What do we know about magnets (color, shape, size)
Invest.: Choose one factor and test it. For example does size matters?
Conclusion: Size does matters, color not
Discussion: Every team shares their conclusions.

How much sugar do we eat in a day?
Orientation: what is sugar?why is it important for our organism? can it be harmful too? Different types of sugar.
Conceptualisation: Estimate how many grams of sugar we usually eat in a day.
Investigation: every student makes its own research based on his/her diet and analyses the composition of everything he/she eats in a day.
Conclusion: We will find out if we really eat more or less sugar that we thought.
Discussion: are we really aware of the quantity of sugar we consume? What can we do to prevent it?

1) Orientation: Introducing the solar system through videos, sites and applications.
2) Conceptualization: Write in a sticker paper everything you want to know or ask about the solar system. Create a board in the classroom with our students' questions and interests.
3) Investigation: Students work in groups. Each group does some research in order to find answers to the previous questions.
4) Conclusion: Each team comes to some conclusions. Pupils present the results and the answers of their research to the classroom.
5) Discussion: Students talk in the classroom about the results and they check their reliability.

The Solar System

Orientation: a astronaut is traveling through space towards the sun on his spaceship. What does he see? how does time flow on the journey between a planet and the other?
Conceptualization: students ask themselves what information they need to describe the journey of astronaut realistically
Investigation: students look for images, information and data on the planets, in the site space awarenss. They record the astronaut's voice and create a video with images that he could see in his journey. each group of students prepares a podcast on a step of the trip
Conclusion: Pupils comment classmate's podcast
Discussion: Pupils actively understand the space around us

Reaction times and spinning

Orientation; Discussion on roller coasters, roundabouts etc and how you feel after getting off.
Conceptualization; Use the discussion to form a hypothesis relating to the affect of circular movement on reaction times.
Investigation; Design an experiment
Conclusion; using the results obtained, was the hypothesis correct?
Discussion; Compare outcomes

Citizen Science

In Ireland, Space and Astronomy have been reintroduced onto the course. I plan to use Cerberus with my first years, the gaming concept will keep their interest. The WOW projects has plenty of interdisciplinary materials that crosses a number of subjects in Irish schools.

Boys and gender stereotyping

Working in a boys post primary school means gender stereotyping is Rife. We invited Dr Mae Jamieson into talk to the boys. She was the first female Afro-American astronaut into space. Their first meeting with an astronaut was a female. Yearly we ask our first year students to carry out project work on famous female scientists.
I think it is more difficult to work with parents on this as many of them have strong gender bias in their own ideas. I think the message needs to move from the boys to home on this, by providing good female role models in our schools
