This webpage that I have included is from the Government of Canada. The article explains the many ways that credit fraud can happen, how to prevent it, and what the next steps are if you have experienced it.

The reason I chose to include this webpage is that it has resources on how to put a fraud alert on your credit card. This is a great resource because many people may not know what to do if they are experiencing fraud. It also provides a link to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, where you can report the fraudulent event. Many people do not realize they are being scammed of their banking information until it happens. If you suspect that there has been a breach of your information, follow the information provided in this link as soon as possible to prevent further purchases from being made.

This article from CIBC explains how they can protect you from fraud while banking with them. They highlight the different kinds of fraud as well as what they can provide to clients in regard to credit or debit card fraud.

I included this article because CIBC offers a lot of protection for their consumers. They send sent out text and email alerts when there is fraud suspicion, as well as offer a service where you can lock the card from the mobile app. I believe that this bank has great resources to prevent credit and debit card fraud and insightful information about it.

This article is from the Canada Revenue Agency. It gives many examples on the different ways that people can get scammed into giving their credit/debit card information as well as how to recognize them.

The reason I chose to include this article is that it is important to be able to recognize a scam. There are many emails, text messages, and phone calls from scammers impersonating companies. Because these scams can seem very realistic, it is necessary that you keep your information private if it seems suspicious. By understanding the different ways that scams can happen, it will hopefully be easier indentify them. Because phone call scams are on the rise right now, many people are falling for them, especially older adults. If you believe that your credit or debit card information has been compromised, you need to file a report as soon as you can.

This website talks about the ways that Visa protects clients from fraud by using their liability protection policy, Visa secure, Neural Networks, EMV chip security and address verification.

I chose to include this article because it is useful for individuals who are looking to sign up for a credit card. Many people are worried about what could happen should they experience fraud. The zero liability protection provides comfort to Visa credit card holders as it takes the liability off of the consumer. When choosing a credit card, it is important to do your research to make sure that you are protected as much as possible against fraud. Knowing that your credit card company will protect you in situations where your information may have been compromised is an necessary quality.

This photo is a text message I received from somebody claiming to be the Canadian Revenue Agency. As shown in this photo, this text is coming from a (289) area code. This is a good indication that this is a scam, because the CRA would never send a text message from a local area code. This is clear that they were going to try and get my banking information. Another good indicator that they were going to try and get my card information is because they are claiming to be the CRA. The Canadian Revenue Agency would never send out a text regarding payment. Typically, if you have been underpaid, they would send a verified email and either send a cheque in the mail or deposit it into your bank account.

This video is about a couple who had experienced debit card fraud. Unfortunately, she had given out their card pin a couple of years prior to their daughter's caregiver. When her card was stolen, she lost over $28,000. Because she had given her pin out prior, RBC insisted that she was liable due to her pin being used.

I selected this video because it gives an example of why it is important to keep your pin safe, and not provide it to anybody. Because this was a debit card, it did not have the same protection as if it were a credit card. The woman said that she felt as though she was being treated like a criminal in hopes of getting her money back. This is an unfortunate story with a good lesson.

Somebody had stolen her card and was able to use her tap feature to make expensive purchases. credit/debit fraud.

The reason I included this video is the tap is a feature that many of us use. Unfortunately, the tap feature makes it easy for thieves to spend money if your card gets stolen. I think that if you do enable this feature, it may be beneficial to set a tap limit just in case your card gets stolen. Depending on how much money you spend using tap, you can adjust it to your comfort. I typically think $100-200 is a good limit to set.

Watch from 1:14-2:27

In this clip, CBC news goes house to house informing people that their information has been stolen because they gave it to a scam call. The scammers claimed that if they paid a one-time fee, they would have a lower credit rate for the rest of their life.

These calls are very common and affect many Canadians. I provided this video to show why it is so important to verify who you are talking to on the phone before giving out any information. A lot of times, these deals sound too good to be true, and that is because they are fake. The people in the video had no idea that they had been scammed over a year after they received the calls. When the CBC host showed them the recording of the call, they had no idea that they had been scammed. This is a sad reality on why you should never give out your information over the phone, even if it seems to be real.

Watch from 5:21-10:10

In this video, they have one person call Rogers on behalf of the other to see how much information they can get. The first call they made, the customer service representative did not allow him to make a call on behalf of the other person. The second call he made, he pretended to actually be the other person. He provided the wrong postal code number and the wrong pin and was still granted service. From there, he was also able to get the representative to add a channel, add security questions, add himself as a primary account holder as well as change her password.

This video is an excellent representation of just how easy it is to have your credit information hacked. Even though he got all of her information wrong, he was still able to himself as a primary, lock her out of her account as well as make further charges. I included this video because it is important that you have two-step verification with anything that is linked to your banking. Things such as security questions, two-step verification, and voice recognition (where available) are great ways to prevent credit or debit fraud. It is also a good idea to research your provider to make sure that all of their representatives have the same training and make sure that her account and banking information is secure.

1. Something that I learned about my topic that surprised me the most is how many people have their credit card information stolen. When watching video #4, I was amazed to see how many people had their credit card information stolen as well as listening to the recording of how they got it. I have always heard about bank fraud in the news and have always been told not to answer suspicious phone numbers, so the number of people that were actually scammed surprised me. It is clear that many individuals fall for these scams and I believe that there should be more information from banks on how clients can prevent fraud.

2. As shown in Image #1, I receive many suspicious text messages and phone calls. I have had phone calls from people who know my name and pretend to call from my bank, as well as getting text messages saying payments have failed from subscriptions that I don't have. This topic was relevant to me because I learned about the many ways that credit and debit fraud can happen, as well as found tools on what to do if I am ever a victim of fraud.

This assignment has been a great opportunity to research ways to prevent fraud. I am confident that I can demonstrate credit/debit card safety in my daily life with the information I have learned.

3. The most important information that I can pass on to my family and friends is not to give out any banking or personal information over the phone. After researching my topic, phone calls and text messages seem to be the newest and most effective methods of committing fraud. I would also pass on the information about what to do if they believe they experiencing credit or debit card fraud, included on Website #4.
