Creating a positive and inclusive classroom climate for gifted students by EUN Partnership aisbl

Think about the diverse strategies mentioned in the video: have you already implemented any of these techniques in your classroom? If yes, how have they positively impacted the learning experiences of gifted students? Try also to explore the availability of support services, like a Gifted and Talented coordinator, in your school. Have you collaborated with such services to enhance the educational experiences of gifted students? If not, consider how you could leverage these resources

First o all, we don't have a gifted and Talented coordinator in my school. As for the various techniques mentioned, I have used some. For example, making learning fun is good for all students, not only gifted. Differentiation of activities could work but is extremely hard for the teacher. Giving gifted students a leadership role definitely works. Gamification is also a very good strategy as well as the use of technology.

So in many cases we try to find ways, to take courses so we could try to help aw much as possible. I create different games as kahoot, genially or puzzles (jigsaw) so they can learn having fun.

Last year I faced a difficult situations with a classroom in which I had two gifted students together with several with educational needs plus une student within the autism spectrum. The extent of differentiation that I needed in every single lesson was exhausting when it came to preparing materials and projects. I have not yet found an easy or simple way to cater for such a variety of students. I really hope this course en lights me a little bit 🙂

The products of these projects are usually up to them, students decide how they will present the final work/product.
The one thing I struggle with is grouping them together - it may seem unfair for the rest of the class because then tey say that that group of gifted studnets is going to be the best, and they feel they can't do equally good. So, I don't do that. I mix them up with the others and ask the gifted to help other - peer teaching is what they can do.

However it is in the teacher's hand to help them and organise- plan the class and set goals. The teacher can divide them into groups to learn how to collaborate and not single them out. Give them additional tasks, prepare other activities and encourage them feel well, express themselves without stress and make the learning fun with activities based on their needs and interests. Also interesting, although difficult to implement in the classroom in Greek schools) is the opportunity for these students to use the computer for more personalized work.
Since there is no Coordinator in Greece specifically for these children, (as was said by other colleagues) the relevant guidance can be given by the General Education Counsellor or the Special Education and Inclusive Education Counsellor.

I often turn to the more advanced to teach those who have more difficulty, without emphasizing the characteristics of each one. In other words, I put them to work in pairs, strategically distributed, or simply ask those who finish their tasks to go help those who haven't done so yet. Providing more challenging work also works with gifted students. Or do research based on their interests, applied them to mathematics. Unfortunately, in Portuguese public schools, there is still no true integration of gifted students, so it will still be difficult to implement a specific service for these students.

I teach 2 subjects, 6 grades (10 groups), without a text book nor activity book, with different tech equipment in each classroom and it's impossible for me to do this for every class. It's sad, but it's true.
However, one of the techniques that I have never think of trying and that sounds great for two of my current gifted students is Allowing students to set goals. I think that this implements their interest and their skills, at the same time fights with the boredom they sometimes feel during the classes. This will also make them more engaged in their learning and in realistic in their expectations.
Sadly, but we do not have any support for working with gifted students. A workshop or a course for the teachers occasionally and some rewards for the students who achieved something on state competitions, but nothing more.
