         <title>Ordovician-Silurian Extinction</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The end-Ordovician extinction is generally attributed to two factors: the first wave of extinction may be related to rapid cooling at the end of the Ordovician Period, and the second phase is widely regarded as having been caused by the sea-level fall associated with the glaciation. The drop in sea level would have drained the large intercontinental seas and reduced the available habitat for organisms that favored those settings. No concentration of iridium has been identified near the extinction that would suggest a collide impact like the one identified at the end of the Cretaceous Period.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Devonian Extinction</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> The Devonian began with a flourishing of life and genetic diversity, and ended with mass extinction. Some mass extinctions were caused by a single major, traumatic incident, but that doesn't seem to be the case with the Devonian mass extinction. In fact, this mass extinction was really 8-10 different extinction events over 20 million years; compounded together, they created one massive loss of genetic diversity, as about 75% of the world's species went extinct.<br> </div>]]></description>

         <title>Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>During the final 18 million years of the Triassic period, there were two or three phases of extinction whose combined effects created the Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction event. Climate change, flood basalt eruptions and an asteroid impact have all been blamed for this loss of life. Many types of animal died out, including lots of marine reptiles, some large amphibians, many reef-building creatures and large numbers of cephalic molluscs. Roughly half of all the species alive at the time became extinct. Strangely, plants were not so badly affected.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction - also known as the K/T extinction - is famed for the death of the dinosaurs. However, many other organisms perished at the end of the Cretaceous including the ammonites, many flowering plants and the last of the pterosaurs. Some groups had been in decline for several million years before the final event that destroyed them all. It's suggested that the decline was due to flood basalt eruptions affecting the world's climate, combined with drastic falls in sea level. Then a huge asteroid or comet struck the seabed near the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and was the straw that broke the camel's back.</div>]]></description>
