We spoke about the fact that a significant amount of students did not have a black teacher and that the drop out rates were a lot lower when they did. It is amazing to reflect on our own experiences and share with the other staff members to understand each other better.

We have many meetings in which we talk about important ideas and theories, but we fall short when it comes to putting it into practice. Up until now, we have been discussing all of this in a hypothetical sense, but we have situations in our school right now in which students have shared that they feel marginalized, but we aren't having explicit discussions on how to respond to that in a way that both respects students' identities and cultures while still holding high expectations for them both academically and socially. We need to talk about these things directly, using the ideas from chapters such as the one we read today in order to anchor our discussions.
