The most commonly violated commandment among students is likely Commandment 6: Thou shalt not use or copy software for which you have not paid. Many students, especially in academic settings, tend to download or share software illegally, often due to financial limitations.

Convenience and money are the major causes of violations. Since software may be costly, students may justify software piracy as a safe means to obtain resources that are essential to their study. Students also don't seem to understand the moral and legal ramifications of software piracy. Peer pressure and the accessibility of pirated software are two further factors that might promote unethical conduct.

Increase public understanding of the moral and legal ramifications of software piracy.
Give students access to legal software at a reasonable cost or for free; this will reduce the incentive for them to engage in piracy.
Include lessons on ethical computing in the curriculum to promote an honest culture right away.
Provide guides on how to use open-source and free software as moral substitutes for illegal copies.
