Strengths of Quan (#1).

Through out the story we experience a lot of Quans strengths. One of his strengths is how smart he is. The story explains that he is an a advanced math. In a certain part of the book it explains that Quan studied extremely hard for a test to impress his dad. “Quan wanted to-had to-ace that damn algebra test. So he studied. Hard. Harder than he’d ever studied for anything in his life. And you know what happened? 98%” (Page 32). This explains how he studied for a test and he exceeded his test after he studied hard for it.

Vulnerability of Quan (#1)

In this book, there are many scenarios that Quan feels vulnerable. One of these scenarios was when he was hurt emotionally. This was when he had worked as hard as he could have, and his teacher had a ton of faith in him. Also, he aced the test. Only problem, his substitute teacher lied. He said that Quan looked at his neighbors paper, and to add onto it, his mother was screaming her head off at him. This must have hurt, as all of his hard work ended up contributing to nothing. A piece of evidence for this was on page 34, where the text states "You heard me! Your teacher called. Told me you cheated on the test!". "I didn't cheat, Ma!". "Don't give me that BS Junior!". The evidence is showing the interaction Quan and his mom had, and how mad he is that his substitute lied, and also how his mom believes the sub.

Another scenario where Quan was vulnerable was a snapshot, where his father was arrested when he was staying there. He felt vulnerable because this was a situation where he was hurt emotionally as well. In fact, he was so hurt and scared that he could hardly breath, and his voice was gone. He remembers dreadfully the way his dad got arrested. His dad kept repeating it was going to be okay. It was a very sad moment for a 9 year old Quan, as after his dad got arrested, he couldn't stop kicking and screaming. A piece of evidence is on page 16, where the text states "Daddy kept trying to look back over his shoulder to see what was happening with Quan. He was shouting, 'Its gonna be okay, Junior". This evidence is showing there last interaction before he goes to jail.

Another experience that we saw with Quans strengths is caring. We experience this throughout the whole story because Quan loves and cares for his siblings. He loves and cares for his siblings so much that he goes hungry for them. “Day four, it got tight. Day five, Dasia and Gabe split the final pot pie. (Quan did not eat.) Gabe complained that he was still hungry, so Quan gave him the slice of crap pizza he’d smuggled from school. (Quan stayed hungry.)” (Page 48.) This shows that Quan is willing to sacrifice himself for his siblings by going hungry for days and giving the only food that they have to there siblings.

One of Quans needs throughout the story is that he needs to be trusted. Quan needs to be trusted because when his mom yelled at him for cheating on his math test he actually studied hard and she did not believe him. Another one of Quans needs is that he prefers to be alone but he always needs a friend who cares and understands him. He needs a friend who cares and understands him because he needs to be understood because of his differences. Another one of Quans needs is that Quan always needs to know that his siblings are going to be okay. He wants his siblings to always be okay because he loves them and always cares for them.
