CCNY point shaving (1950)

City College of New York players were bribed by gamblers to fix the game scores for betting profits. In 1951, the scandal was brought to light which lead to 3 CCNY players to be arrested and the CCNY's basketball program to fall apart.

I chose this event because I find it interesting that college players were even getting bribed to fix games not just professionals.

Pete Rose Banned in 1989

Pete Rose was banned from the MLB after he caught for betting on games, those including games of his own team. He was banned from the MLB for life, and he was the all-time hits leader but the ban kept him out the Hall of Fame.

I chose this event because I believe players nowadays still probably bet on games or bet on their own team just haven't gotten caught yet.

John "Hot Rod" Williams (1985)

John Williams arrested over a 1985 point shaving scandal at Tulane. Williams still went on to have a good NBA career that lasted 13 years.

I chose this event because I was interested in the fact that he was still able to have a very good and long NBA career even after being arrested for point shaving.

Rick Tocchet (2006)

Rick Tocchet NHL star and Stanley Cup champion was involved in a gambling scandal in 2006. He linked to an illegal sports betting ring which he plead guilty to his involvement.

I chose this event because I find it interesting that someone that had it all, ruined himself because of a dumb decision like illegally sports betting.

Tim Donaghy (2007)

NBA Referee Tim Donaghy was under investigation by the FBI. He was caught betting on NBA games and feeding information to gamblers.

I chose this event because to this day people believe refs rig games for money and to bet. The conversation comes up after every bad call a referee makes.
