The author also uses the hyperbole "thousands", to paint the visual imagery of a cacophony of screams of raw grief, as denoted by the diction "wails". The hyperbole "thousands" serves to amplify the intensity of his pain, the large number serving to amplify his feelings of sadness and loneliness in a land he does not recognise.

The diction "alone" also ties in with the earlier devices. Despite his many cries of desperation and despair, he goes unanswered and alone, noticed by "nobody".
