The author uses the diction "uncountable" in the phrase "uncountable pain", to show the intensity of grief that the speaker is going through. Lost in a foreign land with no one to turn to, the diction "uncountable" denotes the speaker's pain into an object, implying it is a tangible thing that can never be measured, emphasising the authenticity and realness of his deep pain far away from loved ones (as shown using the diction "alone") and afraid.

The author also uses the hyperbole "thousands", to paint the visual imagery of a cacophony of screams of raw grief, as denoted by the diction "wails". The hyperbole "thousands" serves to amplify the intensity of his pain, the large number serving to amplify his feelings of sadness and loneliness in a land he does not recognise.

The diction "alone" also ties in with the earlier devices. Despite his many cries of desperation and despair, he goes unanswered and alone, noticed by "nobody".

This repetition is like he is calling out to his mother for her comfort and help which shows Singapore is a foreign land, and he does not feel like he belongs here and he is suffering. Calling out to his mother, is like a child whose only support is his parents, this shows he has no support network is Singapore, emphasizing the comfort which can only be brought by his mother.
