King Tut was married to Ankhesenamun, his half-sister, originally known as “Ankhesenpaaten,” which means Living through the Aten. The change of god worship from Aten to Amun has caused this change of names. King Tut married Ankhesenamun when he was only eight years old while she was about thirteen years old.

Tut became pharaoh of Egypt in 1332 B.C. at the age of nine. He ruled the country at a time of conflict, when battles over land raged between Egypt and the neighboring kingdom of Nubia.

The tomb of Tutankhamun lies near the central path through the valley, at centre right. The pharaoh Tutankhamun ruled during the Eighteenth Dynasty, during the New Kingdom. He died c. 1323-1322 B.C and was entombed in the Valley of the Kings, near Thebes (modern Luxor), like most New Kingdom rulers.

King Tut died at age 18 or 19 around 1323-1322 B.C, but there are many theories surrounding how he died. There is a small bone fragment on the inside of his skull that intially led some historians to believe that King Tut was murdered by a blow to the back of his head.

Discovered in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter and his benefactor Lord Carnarvon, the tomb's four chambers were crammed with such spectacular objects as gold-covered chariots; elaborately carved alabaster vessels; inlaid furniture; a vast array of Tutankhamun's personal belongings, including jewelry.

A hole in his skull fuelled speculation he was murdered, until a 2005 CT scan ruled that out, finding the hole was likely from the mummification process. The scan also uncovered the broken leg.

The newest tests paint a picture of a pharaoh whose immune system was likely weakened by congenital diseases. His death came from complications from the broken leg – along with a new discovery: severe malaria.

In 2005, Egyptian officials authorised a suite of tests on the mummy, including 3D X-rays and DNA analysis. These culminated in a report in 2010 that claimed to have finally established the cause of death: Tutankhamun was an inbred weakling who died of malaria.

“King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh”, tours several major cities around the world. This exhibition, which celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, toured globally and featured over 150 authentic artifacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb, 60 of which had never previously left Egypt.

Not long after the tomb was opened, Carter’s benefactor Lord Carnarvon suddenly died. This may have given birth to the story of the curse, though it doesn’t explain how Carter himself lived nearly two more decades before his death in 1939. The truth of Carnarvon’s demise was that he was already in poor health at the time the tomb was opened. Experts have even stated that the sanitary conditions would have been better within the tomb than outside it, meaning that Carnarvon was likely safer when he was within the tomb’s walls.
