In the article "Animals Like Us", the central idea is that humans and animals have a very complicated relationship with each other. To explain this in an example of a complicated relationship, the author has said in their article, " Like many cat lovers, she conveniently ignored the fact that from lions to tabbies, all members of the family Felidae eat flesh for a living" (Herzog 22). With this evidence, the author explains how people will ignore how cats kill, but label snakes as killers and care if they do the exact same thing cats do. This is being hypocritical towards snakes when their pets are doing the same, and even worse. This is just one example where the author explains complicated relationships between humans and animals.

Just one example of these occurrences is, "She could either quit eating fish, or stop thinking of herself as a vegetarian" (Herzog 4). The reader can see from this quote that the subject in the anecdote, Judith, is caught between two of her morals and is forced to choose which one she'd rather favor. This shows moral complexity because Judith's morals of animals are clashing together, pressing her to make a decision.

In the article "Animals Like Us" the relationship between humans and animals is morally complicated because animals can effect people in many ways and influence the way that person lives and believes. An example from the article is when it talked about Jim Thompson and said that "He even began to question the morality of keeping pets, including his beloved white cockatiel." (Herzog 2). Jim Thompson's outlook on not wanting to eat or keep animals affected him greatly because he turned his pet cockatiel loose. The example shows that the relationship between humans and animals is morally complicated because humans think of things in greater size than what the actual size of what's going on is.

The central idea from the passage "Animals Like Us" is stated in the first few lines. The narrator states, "The way we think about species often defies logic." An example, or citation to support this claim of a central idea would be the situation the author gave readers with Judith and Joseph. According to the text, "When she was 12,
Judith decided that it was wrong to kill animals just because they taste good. But what exactly is an
animal? While it is obvious that dogs and cats and cows and pigs are animals, it was equally clear to Judith that fish were not. They just didn’t feel like animals to her. " Logically, fish are animals and living creatures, but it's said that Judith just 'felt' like they weren't.
