The Nurse and the Tutor are gossiping about Medea's situation, highlighting the class divide in this society. We find out more about the relationship between Medea and her children through the conversation between these two characters, "What sort of father is Jason to you children?". Further on in the extract, the chorus extend this idea of a tense relationship, "Not calm yet". We see glimpses of Medea's mental instability, "Come, flame of the sky, Pierce through my head!" The extract ends with conflict between Creon, the King of Corinth, and Medea due to the rage towards her husband.

we read the script objectively and decided what elements we could change. We changed the setting to a cafe, in order to keep the modern theme going.


Why did we choose to do it this way? 
it was an easy way of portraying what was happening in the scene, and the easiest way to comply with the brief, of modernising the piece.


Our understanding of Medea's character: she is distraught because of her split from Jason, she is confused and wants revenge but doesn't know how to go about it.

We decided to set our extract in South Wales, Rhondda. We wanted to include lots of comedic elements, and voice the opinions of Medea, the Nurse and the Chorus.


Why did we choose to do it this way? 
We felt that performing our extract in a comedic way and with a thick Welsh accent would engage the audience and therefore appeal to modern audiences. 


Our understanding of Medea's character: 
Medea is deeply emotional due to her husband, Jason leaving her for a younger woman. We displayed Medea's passionate love for Jason, this was then interrupted by her vengeful nature, which resulted in her wanting to kill her children and herself.

Medea has gone through a very emotional stage in her life as a result of Jason leaving her. She says ‘’it has crushed my heart’’.  I feel that Medea is feeling extremely low because she says ‘’ I want to die Jason was my whole life; he knows that well ‘’.  Medea went crazy with Jason because he married Glauce who is the daughter of Creon the king of Corinth which is the Greek city of where the play is set.

She eventually avenges Jason's betrayal with a series of murders, concluding with the deaths of her own children. Famously, the pleasure of watching Jason suffer their loss outweighed her own remorse after killing them. Once Jason found out about Medea’s revenge of killing their two sons, Medea had already gone to Athens in a ‘chariot of dragons’ which was sent by her grandfather. However, it didn’t end there Medea took her revenge by presenting to Glauce a cursed dress, as a wedding gift, that stuck to her body and burned her to death as soon as she put it on. Not only did this kill Jason’s new wife it also killed her father when he tried to save her.

In Greek society in that day and age women had very little value in comparison to the men. So therefore because Medea is a woman, she has next to no rights in the male-dominated Greek society. She's an intelligent woman, which makes the men even more uncomfortable!

This part of the script shows her journey from considering suicide to seeking revenge on jason.

firstly Medea is the loving mother of two boys. She had recently been betrayed by her husband Jason. Jason has abandoned Medea, along with their two children. He hopes to advance his station by remarrying with Glauce, the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth, the Greek city where the play is set.

Medea is destroyed by this experience and nurse and the little boys' tutor believes that she is unable to look after the children. We know that she is dealing with poorly because of the line, “I want to do die Jason was my whole life” she is crazy in love with Jason so this line adds to the effect of the character. Near the end of the scene, we see how she rises from her depression and getting her revenge by killing her own children

But then Jason Betrayed her and his sons, to gain an alliance with the king of Corinth. He had married King Creon’s daughter, Glauce. Medea’s was deeply hurt by this and has been distraught with the news, she has cried and whaled for days. From this news she has born a new hatred for her sons because of what their father has done. Her Nurse fears of what she might do with this hatred. She is broken and wants revenge for what Jason has done to her. This revenge is only Spurred on by he fact that King Creon,  has ordered her and her children out of Corinth in exile because he fears she will seek revenge on his daughter for stealing her husband.

The play explores how Medea expresses her grief despite the threat from a traditional and repressive society. 

One of the first things Medea says is how she wants to die. She also says that she wants her children to die with Jason, as they are a constant reminder of her love and marriage with him.  The Nurse reminds Medea that the children have done nothing to warrant her hatred, but Medea denies this and continues to wish death upon her husband and children. 

We know that Medea is very depressed and she therefore challenges the stereotype of women in that age (ancient Greece.) The play itself is very ahead of its time, due to its progressive themes and the empowering of women. Medea is an atypical mother, that all together represents the torment that is going on inside her head.

We learn that the cause of her pain is due to her husband, Jason, leaving her. Due to this her outrage and pain of Jason leaving her reflects upon her children and she eventually wants to kill them.  
The nurse character does not agree with Medea and believes that she is not in the right state of mind to care for her children.  
Medea challenges the typical stereotypes of the women of her time, belittling the male figure and empowering herself.

However, further on in the extract another personality trait is revealed, with Medea increasing her confidence and wanting to place revenge on Jason. With the feeling of hatred building up inside her, she starts to take these emotions out on her children, and eventually kills them. Due to these actions, the character of Medea is atypical of women at the time as she is very confident and holds a lot of power due to her actions.

She is passionate, vengeful, and unrelenting in her pursuit of justice. By the Greeks, she is considered wild, almost animal, and this opinion is substantiated (or, perhaps, forced upon her) when Jason's betrayal of her incites her to kill her own children to punish her cheating husband.

The nurse and tutor believe Medea to not be in the correct mind set to take care of her children, as she is heard wishing death upon herself and her two sons and Jason, ‘Children, your mother is hated and you are cursed. Death take you, with your father’. This continues throughout the extract, the nurse stating that she cannot be reasoned with, highlighting Medea’s stubbornness, which is later shown in the play as she makes plans to have revenge on Jason, instead of leaving Corinth. However, later in the extract, Medea appears to grow stronger and becomes overcome by her thoughts of revenge. This shows that Medea is not typical for women of her time, but instead breaks the stereotype that women must be silenced.

She tries to conceal the pain and anger that she feels towards Jason and yet that concealment led her down a darker path and whilst she is a villainous, evil woman she is also just a product of the events that befall her during the piece. She is a product of her time, and the play allows the audience to question the actual nature of Medea and how much blame she should take for the travesties she commits. Medea is a broken woman before the show even begins and she is confused as to what her aims are from the beginning of the piece. In that confusion and rage she kills her children as a retaliation to Jason leaving her. This action forever twists the character of Medea and makes her impossible to sympathize with as an audience even when she is treated with utter disrespect.
