I also feel angry and a little upset as while some people try to help the leatherback turtles, others hunt and poach them.
People throw plastics into the sea, and when the leatherback turtles mistaken them as their jellyfish prey, they would eat it, resulting their death. The most heartwarming one was the one on the passenger pigeon. It was the most common bird in the U.S until the Europeans came and destroyed their natural habitat to build farms, so, the pigeons started living in the farms, but since the pigeons were destroying the farmers' crops, the farmers shot them. The last living pigeon was called Martha, named after George Washington's wife. Martha died when she was 29 at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. After her death, she was packed in an enormous 300-pound block of ice and shipped to the Smithsonian.

The main threats which affect marine turtles are:

  • PollutionA paper published in  stated that almost 100% of leatherback eggs in Thailand were poached, while in some areas the egg harvest and illegal poaching has removed more than 95% of the clutches. This has been recognized as the main cause (together with fisheries mortalities and poor hatcheries practices) for the collapse in the Malaysia population. There are now few large populations from which eggs could be collected 91,000 in 1980.
    Hooked, Tangled, Harvested

    Leatherback sea turtle populations have been decimated by a fishing technique known as longlining, in which fishing vessels lay out 40- to 60-mile-long (64- to 97-kilometer) lines of vertically hanging baited hooks.

    Leatherback sea turtles get caught up and tangled in these hooks, causing them to drown. Scientists are uncertain as to what attracts the leatherbacks to the hooks, which are used primarily to catch swordfish and tuna.

    According to a recent study conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts (a non-profit philanthropic organization based in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), longline fishing fleets set on the order of 1.5 billion baited hooks in the world's oceans each year. 
    To help remedy this problem, U.S. longline fisheries already have been restricted or closed in areas where leatherback sea turtles are known to swim. But scientists believe that this will not be enough to save the leatherbacks from extinction.
