Since I was a kid, my grandma had always told me that I was going to inherit an old gold coin on my eighteenth birthday. And so this year, when we were at a celebratory family lunch she brought it out and gave it to me. She told me, like her grandfather told her, that this coin has been in the family for a long time and that it is to be looked after and later given to the my first born grandchild to carry it on.

Mila

There aren't many heirlooms in my family because my great-grandparents never had had enough money to have bought anything that would last. Everyday items were used until they were finished, and then new ones were bought to replace them. One of the few things that managed to survive several generations are Christmas decorations. So today we have old Christmas decorations and baubles that my great-grandparents had bought. Since the decorations are only used few days a year, they are well preserved. The decorations have great sentimental value.

Eugen

My brother knows how to play the piano, so he used to practice on it, and I’ve also tried it a few times, although I don't know how to play. The piano is quite out of tune and not in the best condition, so it's not played anymore, but it still serves as a decoration.

David

An item that has existed in my family for a relatively long time is a very old pot. My great-grandmother had bought it many years earlier and then gave it to my mom as a gift when she was young. The pot is still in our kitchen because it is high-quality and well preserved. I usually use it for cooking. Although it is small and shallow, it is ideal for making one portion of porridge. By the time I learn to cook better, it will probably have been destroyed, but for now it is still useful.

Lana K.

An item that has been in my family for generations is an old wall clock that was passed down from my great-grandparents. It has hung in our living room for as long as I can remember. The clock has ticked through countless family moments, and it has reminded us of how much time has passed. My parents have taken great care of it, and I’ve always admired how beautifully it has been preserved. The clock still works, and we all love hearing it tick each day.

Luka

It's not so decorated but a well-worn book published in Zagreb which has resided in grandma's drawer for decades. We have kept it because it represents her devotion. My dad had bought it back in 2002, and since then it has been passed from one family member to another. After my dad bought a new car, my mum started driving it. Later, when she got her own new car, my grandma began using it, although she mostly kept it in the garage. Now, it’s finally my turn, I have been driving it for about a month. It’s old but reliable and it runs perfectly.

Tomo

She has always loved cooking, and even now at 74 she still talks about her favorite dishes. Whenever she had free time, she would spend hours in the kitchen, making good cakes with simple ingredients. Over the years she has created so many amazing meals, but the princes krafne have remained the best. They are soft, sweet and the best recipe in the book. Our family has enjoyed them for generations, and my dad likes cooking them.

-Marko
