Using multiple linear regressions and controlling for students' background, motivation, and prior achievement, we investigated how much variance in science and math course grades and achievement test scores could be explained by time spent on homework in those classes. Taking into account all UK schools, this would add up to one million late pieces of homework a day across the country. An average secondary school student gets six pieces of homework a week and spends an hour on homework every night according to the research. However, more than a third of the students do not believe that the homework they are set adds to their learning experience. The study also reveals that age 13 is the worst age for submitting homework on time, coinciding with a dip in attitudes towards homework. This comes after students tend to hit a “homework peak” at age 12 and before age 14 when punctuality begins to increase once again ahead of GCSEs. The survey found that students aged 13, in years 8 or 9, are:

Least likely to complete their homework on time (67 per cent).

Most likely to get parents or guardians to complete homework for them (23 per cent).

Most likely to think homework shouldn’t be given to them (54 per cent categorically say no).

Least likely to think homework adds to their overall learning experience (45 per cent think it doesn’t)

Current methods of reminding students:

1)Student organizer/handbook/diary

2)Online platforms such as google classroom

Nowadays technological development are used and can be found everywhere

As a student,I can see the applications of technology in the present education system such as: Providing students with PLDs(Personal Learning Device),uses online platforms for online lessons such as zoom making lessons more engaging like using Kahoot or Blooklet and creating platforms to spread around announcements such as Google classroom or WhatsApp Groups.

Supported evidence:

https://smiletutor.sg/why-students-should-use-social-media-as-a-learning-platform/

Introducing social media in the classroom helps improve cognitive abilities such as memory, critical thinking, comprehension, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills.

From the above,I can infer that students benefit from using technological innovations in their education. Moreover,I feel that students get reminded best from using online platforms (from my current experience as a student). However from my experience,I noticed that teachers send in the reminder for the completion of the assignment very late minute such as the night before the due date. Therefore students who forgot about the homework would eventually remember it but will realize that it is too late to complete the assign. Therefore resulting them in failing to do the assignment. :(

What?
What is pollution? Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants.

What is air pollution? Air pollution refers to the contamination of our air with harmful gases and particulates. Globally, 9 out of 10 people breathe polluted air but many people are unaware of the potential health and environmental impacts of poor air quality.

What causes air pollution? Air pollution is caused when harmful gases and chemicals are released into the air. These pollutants include Particulate Matter (very small particles that get into our respiratory system), nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide. The majority of these pollutants are emitted through human activities like burning fossil fuels, vehicle exhaust fumes and emissions from agriculture and industry.

When?
When does air pollution happen?

Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, smoke from fires, or fumes in harmful amounts. Tiny atmospheric particles - aerosols - are a subset of air pollution that are suspended in our atmosphere. https://www.ucsusa.org/resources/does-air-pollution-affect-global-warming#:~:text=Air%20pollution%20occurs%20when%20the,be%20both%20solid%20and%20liquid.

Where?
Where does pollution occur? Mobile sources – such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains. Stationery sources – such as power plants, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and factories. Natural sources – such as wind-blown dust, wildfires, and volcanoes. https://www.nps.gov/subjects/air/sources.htm#:~:text=mobile%20sources%20%E2%80%93%20such%20as%20cars,blown%20dust%2C%20wildfires%2C%20and%20volcanoes

Who?
Who is being affected?

Populations most at risk of health problems related to air pollution:

people with lung diseases, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

infants and young children

people who work or exercise outdoors

adults over 65

people with a cardiovascular disease

people in poverty; people who lack access to health care

people who smoke or are exposed to second-hand smoke

people working in occupations where there is high exposure to contaminated air

people who spend a lot of time near busy roadways

Both short and long term exposure to air pollutants have been associated with health impacts. More severe impacts affect people who are already ill. Children, the elderly and poor people are more susceptible. https://www.who.int/news/item/15-11-2019-what-are-health-consequences-of-air-pollution-on-populations#:~:text=It%20increases%20the%20risk%20of,poor%20people%20are%20more%20susceptible.

Why?
Why has no one addressed this issue? In the future, the world will face many new environmental problems, yet the scientific and policy research community will not necessarily recognize these problems as they come up. Which agendas environmental scientists and policymakers advance depends on many factors, including media attention and socioeconomic and historical dynamics. The identity and the values of the agenda-setters influence which issues are emphasized and which are neglected—purposely or unintentionally. Prioritizing environmental information is made even more difficult since the state of the environment is constantly changing and new scientific findings are constantly coming to light. The issues that do gain recognition may often be informed by outdated or incorrect data, even when more up to date environmental information may exist. A team led by Jari Lyytimaki at the Finnish Environment Institute examined how and why potentially important environmental topics may be left out of assessments, debates, and decisions by using light pollution as a case study. Their goal was to better understand what factors cause an issue to fail to receive attention and the implications of not prioritizing certain types of environmental information. Lyytimaki's team used pollution caused by lights as an example of a neglected environmental issue. Even though light emissions have increased rapidly and their effects can be measured by anyone—even without scientific equipment—light pollution has not been prioritized in assessment, management, and planning. Light energy emissions have grown rapidly since the 1950s, impacting rural and natural areas hundreds of kilometers away from urban light sources. Scientists have published many studies measuring the safety benefits of lighting, but research and assessments examining the biologically disturbing impacts are less common. The studies on light pollution that do exist document negative ecological, biological, medical, astronomic, and economic impacts of lighting. Lyytimaki's team believes light pollution is an emerging environmental problem still garnering interest that could potentially become a serious future challenge. The team identifies four dynamic and ever-changing forms of non-recognition or unawareness that may explain why light pollution is largely ignored, as well as potential solutions:

Recognized unawareness: a person suspects that light pollution may have negative effects, but thinks there is not enough information to determine how important light pollution may be. Similarly, the actor may not have the resources to use information that is available or may think the available information is imperfect. This can be addressed by improving access to accurate and timely information.

False awareness: a person believes that all the information is accessible and that he has it, even when the information that he has may be insufficient, outdated, or misunderstood. In the case of lighting, a person may think he knows all there is to know about lighting because it is a common aspect of his life—not something that he would question. Many people have not experienced true darkness and perceive artificial lighting to be the norm. The team speculates that because artificial lights have become ubiquitous, scientists have not researched their negative impacts at the same rate as their benefits, even though research on their negative impacts indicate potentially serious problems. One possible solution to this problem is disproving people's inclinations to think of lighting as harmless with numerical estimates, such as the International Energy Agency's estimate that global carbon dioxide emissions from lighting are two-thirds that of motor vehicles.

Deliberate unawareness: People do not find an environmental topic to be important, and thus do not seek out more information on the problem. Even when the problem starts to become a topic of interest, people purposefully set aside the facts. As light pollution starts to become a topic of interest, people may find that changes to address light pollution are too radical and stressful to address. Scientists and practitioners can potentially address this kind of unawareness by framing their arguments in ethical and emotional terms.

Concealed awareness: An actor purposefully omits information and is unable or unwilling to share it with others. This kind of awareness may be motivated by financial issues or a benevolent attempt to secure the public good. Actors may be unable to share information because of a lack of resources or opportunities. For scientists studying lighting, the light-positive paradigm may inhibit scientists from sharing their concerns about light pollution. A critical, open-minded campaign can encourage people to share factual information. Solving problems associated with light pollution can also address other problems, such as carbon emissions. Yet, Lyttimaki's team says that breaking the paradigm that light is always good—essentially changing how people perceive light and darkness—may be a necessary step to bringing light pollution into the public eye. Depictions of light as symbols of progress, modernity, goodness, and godliness are embedded across cultures and time. To effectively understand how to advance environmental information, decision makers and scientists should be aware that people have different reasons for unawareness and non-recognition of environmental problems. Decision-makers can use this as a starting point to develop techniques to solve information problems. https://environment-review.yale.edu/how-and-why-environmental-issues-are-neglected-0

How?

How does air pollution affect our health? Air pollution has a huge impact on our health, reducing quality of live and cutting lives short. In fact, it’s the world’s largest single environmental health risk. It aggravates breathing conditions and increases the risk of asthma attacks leading to more hospital admissions. Prolonged exposure can cause serious medical conditions, such as cancer, heart attacks and strokes. In fact, one in three deaths from strokes, lung cancer and chronic respiratory disease globally are caused by air pollution?

How does air pollution affect the environment?

A great number of air pollution sources are also those of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Greenhouse gases cause the Earth’s heat to be trapped in the atmosphere, which leads to warmer temperatures, exacerbating climate change.

Air pollution can also impact the quality of soil and water, impacting ecosystems and wildlife.

How can we reduce air pollution?

We need policies and laws in place that protect people’s health and support the shift to cleaner alternatives. At ClientEarth, we’ve taken legal action to combat pollution and fight for clean air in 11 countries across Europe. We’re calling on the UK government to introduce stronger clean air laws to better protect people’s health. We’re also working to design more stringent EU laws that will have an impact in all EU Member States.

The growing global population causes land scarcity and threatens the homes of many. In Asia, home to some of the world’s costliest and fastest-growing housing markets, renters spend more than half their income on housing costs, according to The Cost of Rent Index, which compares the average cost of a three-bed home in more than 50 countries. In a study of 200 cities globally, 90% were found to be unaffordable, with the average home costing more than three times the average income. This housing crisis affects all of us. With a growing global population, more land will have to be shared, and house prices will only go up. Unaffordable housing also fuels homelessness. An estimated 100 million people globally don’t have a home, according to UN-Habitat. If nothing is done about this situation we will only see the homeless population rise in numbers and the quality of life decrease in society.

Acute Chronic Workload Ratio

ACWR is a ratio between acute training loads (training volumes during the previous week) and chronic loads (training loads for the last four weeks). The chronic load (CL) values can change (four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks, etc.), but you can lose valuable insight if you choose a longer CL value.

The ratio itself is calculated by dividing the acute workload (fatigue) by the chronic workload (fitness). For example, an acute workload of 1400 AU may be divided by a chronic workload of 1500 AU, providing an ACWR of 0.93 (1400 / 1500 = 0.93).

Scholar Papers:

Today, the ACWR is a popular and commonly researched metric for injury risk stratification. A systematic review by Andrade et al. used 20 studies, totaling 2,375 injuries from 1,234 athletes in various sports, to investigate an association between ACWR and the risk of injuries resulting in loss of playing time in elite team sport athletes (Andrade et al., 2020). While the methodological approaches to calculating ACWR in the examined studies were heterogenous, the study justified the adoption of the ACWR, as the majority of studies suggested that athletes were at a greater risk of time-loss injuries with an elevated ACWR compared to a moderate or low ACWR using sRPE as a measure of internal workload and movement-parameters (or repetitive sport-specific activities in the case of the bowlers) as a measure of external workload. Of note, the review used a study sample of elite athletes that was composed entirely of male athletes (Andrade et al., 2020). Female athletes have an increased likelihood of select soft-tissue injuries (e.g., ACL tears) manifesting from repeated overuse (Webster and Hewett, 2018) so there remains a need to adapt current ACWR analytics to youth, collegiate, and elite female athletes (Arazi et al., 2020).

While stratifying injury risk based on a simplified model of internal and external workload using the ACWR model is deemed the “gold-standard” in sports performance today and has been validated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) (Schwellnus et al., 2016; Soligard et al., 2016), it has not been universally accepted by sport scientists. Impellizzeri et al. created a statistical argument to call for the dismissal of the ACWR as a framework for “predicting injury” (Impellizzeri et al., 2020). Using sRPE data from a professional Italian Serie A football team, Impellizzeri et al. highlighted that the lack of predictive value of the ACWR stemmed from its tendency to conflate statistical significance and odds ratios. Performing such analysis with objective rather than subjective data is necessary to remove potential data bias provided by the athlete and confound results disseminating from the algorithm. Bornn et al. developed a simulation using daily training loads from Serie A (Italian Soccer) and National Football League (NFL) players. The authors simulated 1,000 player-seasons where the probability of injury depended only on player workload in the session of injury. Although the model was designed so the ACWR would not have an influence on injury risk, the simulation found a statistically significant relationship between injury risk and ACWR (where ratios were flagged if they fell outside of 0.8–1.3). These results imply the relationship between ACWR and injury is a confounded one; an athlete's training schedule may result in the significance found by studies correlating ACWR with injury risk (Bornn et al., 2019). Whether or not there is merit to the use of ACWR, there remains a need to improve and develop new multivariate models to more accurately establish a relationship between athlete workloads and overuse injuries (Bornn et al., 2019; Impellizzeri et al., 2020). While many studies regarding workload measure ACWR, the authors of this review recommend against the use of any one variable to stratify injury risk, including the ACWR. Application of a sport- and context-specific model is necessary and lacking to ensure a high positive predictive value as it relates to monitoring the health, performance, and wellness of athletes. An illustration of this theoretical model demonstrating the integration of all relevant physiologic metrics in determining athlete workload is shown (Figure 4). That being said, some studies have found associations of movement profile parameters with injury risk and have applied ML models to aid in injury prediction based on these parameters. Selected studies are discussed below focusing on youth, collegiate, and elite-level athletes.

Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fspor.2020.630576/full

What pro do students face when carrying heavy bags?

https://asterclinic.ae/blog/the-drawbacks-of-carrying-heavy-school-bags/ (Source)

With children carrying heavier devices (such as laptops and iPads) and books to school, a large number of children suffer from growing deformities that cannot even be corrected, caused as a result of carrying a heavy weight on their backs or rather heavy school bags. Back pain and spinal abnormalities are extremely common in children as young as 10 years. Some of the common issues children face these days are excessive fatigue, muscle and back pain, poor body posture, lumbar pains, neck and shoulder pain, an abnormal curve of the spine etc.

In some cases, children often carry their bag on one shoulder leading to leaning on one side with all the weight. This particularly causes back pain and severe strain to the neck and shoulder. The straps of the backpacks also cause injury by interfering with the nerves and blood circulation.

These issues can cause long-term damage for children growing up. A child’s body is constantly growing and developing, their skeleton gets deformed because of the weight of the backpack and this can cause severe lasting damage. Backpacks cause long-term back problems with poor posture, spine deformity etc. that makes it difficult for the child to function. Identification of the problem is extremely important at an early stage. Heavy backpacks cause back, neck and shoulder pain and this pain becomes worse if kids have sedentary lifestyles.

The health concerns caused due to heavy backpacks can definitely be prevented by early identification of the problem. Parents need to identify signs at an early stage. If the child complaints of back, neck or shoulder pain, leg pain, severe fatigue, or is straining forward when carrying a backpack, get checked with a specialist in order to understand the cause. The overall weight of your child’s back pack should not be more than 10% of your child’s overall weight.

Why do students bring heavy bags?

http://impactofheavyschoolbags.weebly.com/causes.html (Source)

[A case study]

The parents mostly mentioned that the cause of the problem is;

a) that there are too many books per subject

b) their children fail to follow the time-table properly

c) they do not have enough time to monitor their child.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/the-big-number-when-is-your-kids-backpack-too-heavy/2018/08/31/1f4272d8-ac62-11e8-8a0c-70b618c98d3c_story.html

(Source)

Textbooks and school supplies, plus gym gear, electronic devices, lunches and more contribute to overloaded backpacks.

Chlorophyll content plays a vital role in photosynthetic and biomass production in all plants. Because chlorophyll shows a greater sensitivity to changes in external conditions than do other pigments in foliage, such as carotenoids for example, chlorophyll content in leaves may be a good surrogate for environmental stress, changes in temperature and humidity, as well as in pollutant levels both in the air and in the soil. This paper reviews the potential for chlorophyll content in the leaves of trees as a measure of tree health, resistance to stress and environmental conditions. Because chlorophyll content is shown to decrease dramatically with increases in pollution, non-destructive methods for evaluating the amount of chlorophyll in leaves and its changes over a time may be a sufficient indicator for environmental pollutant levels in the air, in the soil and in the water used by a tree. https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/1006/1/012007/pdf#:~:text=Chlorophyll%20is%20a%20natural%20green,various%20environmental%20conditions%20and%20ecosystems.

The leaves of many trees have large surface areas that can act as a natural filter to absorb air pollution and remove heavy metal pollution and other airborne contaminants. https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/1006/1/012007/pdf#:~:text=Chlorophyll%20is%20a%20natural%20green,various%20environmental%20conditions%20and%20ecosystems.

Objects around us give off heat to some degree, and that heat is
made up of long wavelength infrared radiation that the human
eye cannot see. Thermal imaging uses a sensor to convert the
radiation into a visible light picture. Not only does this picture
help us identify objects in total darkness, or through dense
smoke, but the sensor information can be used to measure
temperature differences as well.
Thermal imaging cannot be used in applications where the
materials absorb long wavelength radiation. Thermal imaging
cannot look through common materials such as water or glass.
There are two types of infrared
detectors: photon detectors and thermal
detectors. Photon detectors usually
offer better sensitivity and response
times than thermal detectors. However,
photon detectors require that the
detector be cooled by liquid nitrogen or
other means, therefore they are larger,
more expensive, and less reliable. Thermal detectors have
become the unit of choice in the law enforcement community.
There are many thermal detection processes available, but the
two most common are resistive bolometers and pyroelectric
sensors. Resistive bolometers are much like complementary
metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) solid state cameras. They
have no moving parts, but must periodically recalibrate
themselves because they constantly respond to the radiation
being produced by an object. Pyroelectric sensors, on the other
hand, respond to changes in the radiation of an object.
Therefore, they must use a rotating motorized "chopper" wheel
to modulate the radiation. This gives them a slight
disadvantage to microbolometers because of noise and reliability.

Source: SAVER is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Office of State and Local
Government Coordination and Preparedness.
Opinions or points of view expressed in this document are those of the authors and do not necessarily
represent the view or official position of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Office of State
and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness, Systems Support Division.
For further information regarding this thermal imaging technology overview please contact Eddie
Broyles, SPAWAR Systems Center Charleston, Law Enforcement Advanced Technology Engineering,
at (843) 218-4423.

on LED datasheets. Typically, the forward voltage of an LED is between 1.8 and 3.3 volts. It varies by the color of the LED. A red LED typically drops around 1.7 to 2.0 volts, but since both voltage drop and light frequency increase with band gap, a blue LED may drop around 3 to 3.3 volts.while a normal lightbulb voltage is around 110 Volts, designed to match the voltage produced by a common electrical outlet. Typical lightbulb wattage (the amount of energy produced) is around 60 Watts

Flooding and Erosion – Without tree roots to absorb water and stabilize the soil, even the smallest of storms will result in significant flooding, topsoil erosion, and landslides.

Air and Soil Pollutants – Trees work nonstop to filter ammonia, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide from the air and soil.

Without trees, these pollutants would find their way into what crops are left and into the feed of what animals are left, not to mention the air we breathe.

Evapotranspiration – Without trees, the process of evapotranspiration would stop. This is the process of moistening the air which produces more clouds. Evapotranspiration is responsible for maintaining the delicate balance between fertile land and dry desolate desert.

Fewer clouds mean less rain. With less rainfall, fertile land would dry up, fresh water sources would run out or stagnate, and agriculture will begin to fail on a global scale.

Acid Rain – Without trees to remove pollutants, what little rainfall remains would be mostly acidic. All remaining plant life would be crippled.

Global Warming – As the earth’s temperatures rise, the polar ice-caps would melt at an accelerated rate, causing ocean levels to rise and inundate coastal lands and freshwater sources.

As witnessed primarily in the south pole, the ice caps are already receding at an alarming pace, and if this melting isn’t slowed or stopped, it could threaten the survival of all wildlife within that ecosystem.

As the ice melts and causes desalinization in the oceans, weather patterns are subject to erratic change. Off-season snow storms, tsunamis, typhoons, hurricanes, and even blistering summers can all be driven by our raising global thermostat.

Labored Breathing – With CO2 levels on the rise and oxygen levels depleted, people with respiratory and blood problems would be the first to die along with animals unable to cope with the atmospheric changes.

Extinction – Small animals which once depended on trees for food and shelter would be the first to perish. Within a short period, the natural food chain would begin to lose its structure, leaving carnivorous scavengers to likely last the longest.

As temperatures continue to rise, the oxygen levels in the atmosphere decrease, and food sources become even more scarce, the food chain – in its entirety – would eventually break down, leaving every living creature on the planet on a collision coarse with extinction. Including mankind.

The timeline and events portrayed above are a representation of the first fifty to one hundred years without trees

Alternative Fuels for Motorcyles

The future looks pretty exciting for alternative fuel motorcycles, as they are of different types and come with unique features.

Air Bike: Pollution free bike that runs on AIR. Designed by Edwin Conan, this Green Speed Air Powered Motorcycle runs on compressed air and causes zero pollution. To store the ambient air in a compressed form in fiberglass tanks, solar panels are used. Though the air bike is a very cool concept, it can be hard to repair or finding cheap parts may be challenging. Hence, it is considered safe for the environment yet it still needs more development.

Water Bike: Without petrol or diesel, bike runs on WATER. These bikes come with hydrogen cells that utilize catalyzed anodes so that the hydrogen atom gives off an electron. While this free electron powers an electric motor, the ionized atom combines with oxygen to produce water. A motorcycle that uses this alternative fuel is unique and great for the planet.

Bio-Fueled Motorcycles: Food to Fuel bike. As bio-fuels are way more eco-friendly and sustainable than fossil fuels, motorcycles which run on them can be a great choice for the discerning consumer. But bikes that use butanol or ethanol might suffer from the low combustion energy of these bio-fuels. Bio-fuels produce lesser energy than gasoline and need to take in more air to run smoothly.

Hybrid Electric: Hybrid diesel/electric engine. Developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the hybrid electric motorcycle runs quietly and uses battery power in stealth mode. But when you want more speed or more power, you can switch to a specialized diesel engine. The Redshift is a completely electric motorcycle that assures a maximum speed of 80 mph.

Battery/Electric Vehicles – Electric motorcycles promise 100% torque, fast acceleration, and as they produce no smoke, they are eco-friendly. Their batteries are recyclable these days, and you can charge the bikes with solar power as well. Electric motorcycles are also lightweight and quiet. One of the companies which has launched two-wheelers with this tech is Ather Energy, which competes against many other electric scooters in a rapidly growing EV market in India.

CNG Vehicles – Motorcycles that run on compressed natural gas or CNG stay cleaner than petrol or diesel bikes when they burn. CNG is cheaper than gasoline, and offers almost the same amount of power.

Each year, millions of acres of forest around the world are destroyed or degraded by fire. The same amount is lost to logging and agriculture combined. Fire is often used as a way to clear land for other uses such as planting crops. 95% of global deforestation occurs in the tropics. Brazil and Indonesia alone account for almost half.Huge areas of rainforest are destroyed by clearing for farming, timber, roads, hydropower dams, mining, house-building or other development. If the current rate of deforestation continues, the world's rain forests will vanish within 100 years- causing unknown effects on global climate and eliminating the majority of plant and animal species on the planet.

For solidarity, they often use binders or oils.

Elastomeric Insulation

Closed-cell elastomeric insulation contains elastomers, giving it high elasticity and flexibility.

Phenolic Foam Insulation

Phenolic foam offers closed-cell insulation with a high R-value and low thermal conductivity. When paired with a quality vapor barrier, closed-cell phenolic insulation, like Polyguard PolyPhen® phenolic insulation, creates a permeability rating of nearly 0.0, to provide excellent protection against chilled water pipe condensation.

Manufacturing makes fire-resistant phenolic foam in large buns by mixing a surface-acting compound with phenolic resin and solids, resulting in a network of microscopic bubbles that cures into foam insulation for chilled water systems. They ship the insulation to the job site after gluing the vapor barrier jackets to the phenolic insulation sections. During application, the contractor will seal the longitudinal seams of the insulation with mastic, then seal the vapor barrier with self-sealing double-coated tape.

https://polyguard.com/mechanical/blog/chilled-water-pipe-insulation
