The rifle was revolutionary during the civil war. They had grooves in the barrel to add spin to the bullet to increase accuracy. The old smooth bore musket made the musket ball bounce around in the barrel, thus making them extremely inaccurate.

This bullet was a cone shaped lead bullet with a diameter smaller than the barrel. These were so much better than the musket balls because they were so much more accurate.

Along with the development of the rifle, the repeater was also made. The repeater allowed for multiple bullets to be stored in a gun and fired without the need to reload after each shot. For example, the Spencer Carbine could fire 7 shots in 30 seconds.

Railroads helped transport materials and soldiers needed for war. The north had a bunch more track for trains than the south did. The north had about 22,000 miles of track while the south only had only about 9,000 miles of track. This gave the North a huge advantage because most of their tracks were "standard gauge." This meant they didn't have to keep switching trains like the South did.

The telegraph was a way of communicating messages along a wire with electric signals. President Lincoln used this to help communicate with generals in battle. Over 15,000 miles of cable were laid for the military. The North was able to communicate more. The had far less wire for telegraphs so that meant some info may have not gotten through by horse.

The Gatling Gun was a hand cranked gun that had 6 to 10 barrels. Since each barrel only fired once each time, the non-firing barrels had time to cool before it shot again. This design was revolutionary because this meant that a lot of bullets could be fired to cover an area.
