Prior to attending this module, I did have a fixed view of what I cosidered a leader to be. I thought the leader was someone with a high authority (such as a HT to staff and staff to pupils). Now, I have had a realisation that this is not the only form of leadership there is, espcially within the school setting. In what I have learned so far, I am now aware that there are different forms of leadership which can be acquired from a range of sources within the school. I have also discovered that to be an effective leader, you do not need to obtain a formal postition within the school, and it very much depends on the way you interact with other, including your approaches and dedication in meeting a desired vision. In terms of Leadership for Learning, it is clear from engaging in reading about the topic that, leadership is the second best factor in the success of pupils, first being the teacher themself. Discussing about leadeship for learning has made me consider all of the meetings and scenaios I have witnessed during my time on placement and it had allowed me to understand why these meeting were organised the way they were and the impact that they had on the development of the school and the building of relationships amongst staff.

Leadership is not just simply being in a position of power where you are in charge of making decisions and having authority. There. is an importance of values and morals when being a leader and the ability to influence a team of people to be on board with these to be successful. Before this module I assumed a leader was only someone in a position of power such as head teachers however I have now learned that anyone can be a leader, no matter their position in a social context. I have previously witnessed the differences between a good and a bad leader in both schools and work but I can now start to look further into it and determine why a person is a good/bad leader. Having effective leadership can really have a positive impact on a school in terms of educational outcomes.

There are various types of leadership that we have been taught about within this module. This module has definitely helped to develop our knowledge about leaders and different types of leadership styles there are within the work place.  Some of the types of leadership that occur are;

1. Distributed Leadership –This is where the leader requires and sometimes relies on input and ideas from colleagues and team members. This leadership works well bouncing ideas and working to help one another.

2. Transformational Leadership –This type of leader motivates their followers to produce the best work and to achieve goals they set, without much input from themselves.

3. Trait Leadership –This is where we work out what qualities make a good leader and who represents these good qualities.

4. Style Leadership –This focuses on what leaders do and how they act upon certain situations that occur. Within this type of leadership there are two distinct behaviours within – Task behaviours and Relationship Behaviours.

While on placement I have seen many forms of leadership. My class teacher would be a good example of an efficient leader within the work place. She is able to take tricky situations in her stride and deal with it sensibly to produce the best outcomes. Within the school I am at, the teachers and staff work as a team to help benefit the school in several different ways. They all show and identify traits of being good leaders. During staff meetings the teachers spilt into groups taking a subject, discussing it and working out areas to improve within it. Then they all come back together at the end and discuss these ideas and see if they want to take any of them forward. This would be showing distributed leadership.
