I rummaged around in my box of 'useful springs' and found two that looked identical. I loaded them individually to find their stiffnesses, then connected them as in retro tut 1.9. Results: individual stiffnesses 13.6 g/mm and 15 g/mm giving a total of 28.6 g/mm. Stiffness as in 1.9 measured at 27.6 g/mm. Apologies for non-SI units. It is more complicated with non-linear springs but the same principles apply.

Here's a paper model of the new spring, to show how you make it. You cut into a strip from both sides. It's best to mark it out first then make holes at the end of where you'll cut - it reduces 'stress concentrations' so it's less likely to tear. My spring was about 150 overall, 100 between end cuts, 25 wide with 5 margin.

I used disposable plastic drinks cups and the glass beads used for flower arranging. I found it easier to measure the spring lengths using a piece of string, which I then measured against a straight rule. I knew there was a good reason for having 4 bicycles in the dining room! I got similar results to the video and my dynamic bounce test didn't see the pan touching the floor either.
