Thank you SY for opening up your classroom! Learnt a lot about classroom management from you. Appreciate you going the extra mile and translating the worksheet too!! (Hopefully my Chinese +1 after your lesson). Anyways good job & keep inspiring ❤️

Janelle's takeaway

Activating prior knowledge

Interesting way to activate prior knowledge when introducing the past & present (A visible vs invisible enemy!) I like how the introduction of concepts was easy to follow ie. Battles -> Global warming -> SG Green Plan ... okay only part I understood before the content got too cheem... heheee..

Group work

Main reason I was there was to learn how to manage my time when doing group work in class. SY didn't rush through her lesson and STILL managed to get all groups to present [WOW!] I learnt that she did that by ensuring all group members wrote down their learning points during the group discussion (which was also differentiated), then when they came up to present, it was a lot more efficient. Moreover, the students seem to be very familiar with doing group work, they took less than 20 seconds to get into their groups!

Interesting observation

I also teach one of SY's students for EL. I was genuinely surprised that this particular student was SO participative, confident and vocal during HCL lesson. In EL, she is usually quite shy and reserved. I think I can tap on her strength in the Chinese language to help her increase her confidence in EL too.

I think its quite tough to ensure that all groups are on task within the time limit. There were two groups that didn't spend their time wisely. Maybe it would help to have a checklist and one student in the group to monitor that the task gets completed within the allocated time.

Sample checklist:

By (time), #1 should have written his response

By (time), #2 should have written his response

By (time), #3 should have written his response

By (time), #4 should have written his response

Good classroom practices

Waited for students to settle down and be ready before giving instructions

Explicitly state to the class what they will be learning for the day – Adaptive Thinking was made clear to students, and told students at the start of the lesson that they will need to put on their thinking caps.

Resources (video) has been shared prior to the lesson on GC, so students can access it before class

There were 2 students with SEN in the class, and in general the profile of the class consists of quite a few chatty boys. Sook Yee was able to exercise wait time for them to be ready before continuing with class.

Group work

It is evident that students do group discussion frequently as they are very used to the routines for group work.

Active learning, brainstorming and discussion were exhibited by the students and Sook Yee will walk around to check-in on their discussions and provide prompts and scaffolds where necessary. (Differentiation)

The presentation by most of the groups were insightful and shows good effort within the 8 minutes.

Personal thought

I find this lesson enriching and certainly have the potential to collaborate as a Interdisciplinary package with other disciplines. (eg. Sustainability, Science, Innovation etc)

If time allows, maybe can try out Gallery Walk, where one or two students stay behind in their group to present, while the other members walk around to see other ideas, and they can then come back to share. However, there is a need to balance with time, as this mode of presentation can be time-consuming as well.

How well have your students learned (What is the evidence of learning that shows that the students have achieved the success criteria?)? How engaged were your students? How do you know ?
