In college I had a dance teacher that really believed in me. She encouraged me to do push myself and to take the leap of faith to audition for dance companies. She always went to bat for me- when my capstone grant did not originally get funded she fought the system that she believed didn't understand what research in dance looked like and helped me to reapply so I could carry out my grant. We still keep in touch and I always appreciate her perspective and her genuine interest in my journey. Having her as a mentor has challenged me to deepen my approach to dance performance and teaching through her example and our relationship.

I had a college professor that became a mentor to me, even if it wasn't intended as such. Because of his direction and guidance, I was able to find talents in myself that I didn't know I had and could translate those talents to how I interact with people. I've used those same skills for my teaching.

I have had mentors in many aspects of life and in all cases, it was someone older with more experience who guided me to good decisions. Mentors are important for everyone to have at some point in their life.

1. I have personally mentored students who have come from homes inundated with drugs and trauma. I felt that it was my responsibility to remind these students they are loved and capable. Ironically, most of these students were some of my worst behaved at the beginning of the year, but transformed into some of the best when they felt seen and respected.
2. I had a teacher in high school who saw things in me that I couldn't see. He selected me to be the drum major of my school band because he believed I could be a good leader. His mentorship helped me come out of my shell and become a leader. I probably wouldn't be a teacher today if he had not believed in me.
3. In only my 4th year of teacher, I still have students who contact me asking for advice on different issues in their life. It makes me feel that I have done something right in my teaching career because students remember me and trust me.

Last school year I had an 8th grade student who I had had for 6th and 7th grade as well. She was always very quiet and I never was quite sure if she liked AVID. She struggled academically during virtual and I would do office hours where she would attend and only talk in the chat box. When we came back hybrid she was still quiet, but the last day of school she gave me a card sharing how important I was to her because I accepted her for who she was. I am still very proud of this relationship.

The video was moving - the statistics quoted show that having a mentor is definitely impactful. I mentored a student at my last achool and while we were not given a lot of time for the relationship, I did feel that it made a difference to them to have someone who was on their side and encoraging them to improve.
