Name-giving was an important role for training children. The children were encouraged to do the same things as their namesake. It was an important part of learning. Inuit practiced by doing real work, handling things.

To myself, this is a very crucial part of name-giving as the children would learn by doing a lot of hands on things. Also, that the child who was named after someone, they adapt to a lot of traits by who they are named after.

I don’t know much men in my generation who provides for their families. It’s mainly the ladies who provides everything for their families.

To me this quote is true. This generation many of us wasn’t made into human beings. My guess is because we had no one to form us into human beings, or no one teaching how to be human beings. For me is I had no one to make me into a human being because my father and grandfather passed away on my early years on life. From that I had no one. And today I have people wondering why I don’t have knowledge of providing for my family because I wasn’t taught anything.

A child is a human being that can be molded though education. Children should be taught to always look at the bigger picture in everything. Having a family and community have a huge impact on how a child is raised.

Children learn by listening to stories, by using examples and experience. The adults explain to them what is good, what is bad, and they explain how things should be done the right way. They also teach the children to fix up any mistakes they have may have made. By teaching the children to look at the bigger picture in everything, you teach them how to pay attention to many things at once. Like when you are out hunting, you teach them what to do and to be aware of your surroundings. Everybody around a child has a role to play when they are in the upbringing of a child’s life. Children learn by playing, experiencing things. When they have an accident, they learn not to do the same things again to avoid the same accident. The children learn by repetition and routines.

This elder is trying to tell us that we should start teaching our kids (and maybe ourselves) important skills again so that we could help others when they need it so that we aren’t at home doing nothing. Even if we aren’t helping someone out we could be out doing something keeping busy, maybe learning something new or a new way to do something.

Name-giving was and still an important Inuit traditional way of naming our babies. As we get children you ask any of your parents/relative or an elder to name your child or ask for their permission to name the child after them. If they agree, the child will develop their mind as their namesake.

I personally think that when we name a child after their namesake some will be differently from them and some will actually be like them as they get older.

Growing up, we never had much but those who lived next to us had nothing, so when ever we had left overs, my father would tell us to bring left overs to those who had nothing.

This quote i picked from this elder, helps me remember from what i was told as a young girl, people older then me, always told me that if i ever get child(ren) i should always teach them from right to wrong, especially during their early years of life, so i wont have trouble in the long run. Always remember to listen to older people because all of them learnt the hard way and want you to live a good happy life without struggling. ( they may be struggles in life but always listen to older(elders) because they know best.. If you want your children to respect you, you have to tell them from right to wrong starting at young age. No matter how little or young, they will learn in life.. Once you start to have a child(ren) you would want them to have a good life.(struggling or not) we want best for our children.

Inunnguiniq has a lot of good parenting ways, we can learn more about parenting if we read the book and getting to know the book of Inunnguiniq. “About what we come in life” they see us, hear us, they learn from us, be good to them, teach them right from wrong. We are the children’s role model, even if they’re not your own kids. Kids learn from adults.

The joy of helping other’s should be taught in children, no matter who it is (especially the elders) help them, make them happy and could make us (parent) happy too, I was always told no matter how small the item is or no matter what were told to do, it will one day come back to us in someways, teaching our children (child) wil make us very proud, especially the elders around us, even if its just serving tea, or food to the elders they’ll be happy and be very thankful that you helped them, even with the young adults, go and hunt for an elder because I know they crave for caribou/fish, other land animals because that’s all they used to eat, could make them happy because their stomach is finally satisfied after a long while, even if they pay you for hunting, and the young doesn’t want to be paid for it, they will tell people they’re very thankful and proud of them for helping and then it could make you wanna help more people in life..

We learned a lot watching our mother serve others in her work, this was very important part of learning, we practiced by doing real work, handling things. These were very important parts of pour growth, making us more active about the thought of serving or helping others. It was very crucial to make use of our muscles to train yourself, it really encourages to do more work.

My grandfather told a story about an elder naming a child, and my grandfather named my child months before he was born.

This quote reminded me that “being made into a human being” is about learning values, respect and connection to our community and elders. It means that we are not born knowing how to live well and that we must be taught though Inunnguiniq. This being said, without this guidance, people can feel disconnected/lost from who they are and what their purpose is and it shows how important our Inuit culture is.

There is a lot of explanation I can do from just this quote so I will do it.

Being made into a human being should come from love, guidance and respect, no control or fear. When a child grows up in an environment where they are constantly controlled, criticized, not allowed to express themselves then they don’t learn how to trust their own feelings or make their own choices. Joe K’s quote words made me think about how important Inunnguiniq is, it’s about teaching someone to become a good human through patience and understanding, not through control and fear. This is why so many struggle in adulthood, they were never given the chance to learn who they are in a healthy way. It shows me to appreciate the wisdom (from elders) that helps shape us in so many ways such as caring and responsible human beings.
