Project Mercury was the US's first attempt to send man into space and complete an orbit, NASA engineers designed a small,
cone-shaped capsule which was far lighter than Vostok. May 5, astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space even though he did not complete orbit. The US did not have a successful launch until Feb 20, 1962 when John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on the Friendship 7 spacecraft.

NASA designed the Gemini capsule for this program, in design it was very similar to the capsule used for the Mercury missions but it was bigger than the Mercury capsule. It was able to hold 2 people rather than the original design of only 1 person, hence the name Gemini which was an astrological sign essentially meaning twin or 2. It had also improved on design in that it could change the way in which it orbited rather than the previous design that could only be rotated while keeping the constant direction it orbited.

The Gemini capsule flew on a Titan II rocket, originally being a missile they had to make adjustments making it possible to carry people. Before any astronauts flew on it, it launched without a crew in order to test and document its safety.

The first flight to carry astronauts was Gemini-Titan 3. The following mission,Gemini 4, included the first U.S. spacewalk, Gemini 5 made way as it showed it could last in orbit for more than a week, Gemini 6A and 7 missions were in space at the same time and met each other whilst in orbit, Gemini 8 connected with another unmanned spacecraft in orbit, Gemini 9 mission then tested different ways of flying near another spacecraft as well as including spacewalk, Gemini 10 finally connected with another spacecraft and used its engines to transport both vehicles, Gemini 11 mission flew higher than any NASA mission prior and the final mission, Gemini 12, touched up and helped to resolve problems from all earlier spacewalks.
