The target audience for the diapers is the parents, but also the kids. The designers used children which toddlers can identify with and cartoon characters and colors that are so heavily marketed to children, that the kids think those are the only options for someone who looks like them (be it a girl or boy). 

The target audience for the birthday cards are friends of the same sex as the person whom they are gifting the card to. The "women's" cards containing jokes about girls' nights, wine consumption, or kids. Assuming that all or most women have kids, like to drink wine, and have frequent girl's nights out, which is just what the media feeds us. Sometimes the format for the marketing to women and girls are cards like these or "rom-com" movies. The  "men's" cards have wisecracks about cars, beer, or nagging wives.
