Grade 1 & 3 are both encouraged to learn new vocabulary and basic story sequencing. Their engagement model can be difficult to manage as there are mixed levels and language barriers. Instructions must be kept simple, and students should be asked simple comprehension questions that promotes critical thinking.

For Nursery ages 3-4, literacy instruction mainly used would be listening (daily language, vocabulary, stories, instructions) and speaking (vocabulary, singing songs, role-playing and lots of repeating!!). We do a lot of play-based learning where the literacy just starts forming naturally as the year goes on.

An activity that allows students (one or more) to read, write, discuss and/or think about the subject matter. An example for ESL grammar would be to take a sentence and identify the parts of speech of the words and discuss the words and their location in the sentence. This will also help with future tests.

At the secondary level, student agency and ownership becomes very important. My grade 12 students are given a lot of freedom and autonomy in the classroom (self-selected texts, student led socratic seminars) etc. I think there is less scaffolding involved as well, since by grade 12 my students pretty much know what they're doing.
