I live in Alexandria. My interest in art began when I was a kid in San Diego watching my younger sister draw, sing, and play music. My own history as an artist is limited: acting in college and writing and stand up comedy in more recent years. I’ve also dabbled in collage and watercolor. After college, I moved to New York City and enjoyed visiting MOMA and the Met. Two of my roommates were freelance cinematographers and I loved talking to them about their work and seeing a bit of their process. I’m outside my comfort zone here.

I primarily work in photography because I lack the eye and steady hand for drawing or painting. Photography allows a level of control over my work which tends to be highly structured and is becoming more organized and focused. Still lives and landscapes make up the bulk of what I do because they allow me to make adjustments to exposure, depth of field, light, and shadow. I work like this to convey some intention in the work. For example, in the final project, I wanted to convey the beauty that exists in love and death (think Walt Whtiman) so I used symbols of love and death - flowers, a pomegranate, a knife, and oranges - and presented them in aesthetically pleasing but different ways. I cut up the pomegranate and tore the flowers from their stems to create a sense of chaos and a graphic display of death, but then organized the scenes and manipulated the exposure and lighting to keep a tight control over the scene. The red table evoked blood and red is generally striking.

My choice to focus on love and death comes from recent relationship changes (a divorce and a reconciliation), recent deaths, and my 45th birthday (November 25 - today). As I age, death becomes ore common and love becomes easier - I’m running out of time to not appreciate love and understand that I’m getting closer to dying. Perhaps I’m trying to symbolically exert control over both with this work.
