It was written by S. Leigh Savage and Alan Wenkus while being produced by Tomica Woods-Wright, Ice cube and Dr Dre. In April 2012 Gary Grey was announced as Director. Grey had already worked in the film, "Friday" with Ice Cube and "Set it off" with Dr Dre. As well as this he directed some of the music videos. While nobody involved with the film was hurt, one civilian was killed who was near by. However it was announced that filming would carry on in the city as planned.

In January 2015, Suge Knight was involved in a hit and run that left one man dead and one man hospitalized. Witnesses claimed that Knight followed them after an argument on the film set to a burger stand parking lot, and that collisions were intentional. Terry Carter was the man killed. He was the co-founder along with ice cube and a friend of Knight.
