The main character is a pedophile, and his acts make up the plot. This is the main reason why the book is condemned, along with the topic of rape/molestation (though the book contains no explicit scenes, just references to them) and incest (since the main character is technically "Lolita's" stepfather). When it comes to the defenders of this book, they tend to claim the book is a psychological thriller, or a horror book. Its main character is very different than what we are used to reading about. Instead of a hero, he is a deplorable person that is hard to relate to whatsoever. This quote from the Tampa Bay Times sums up the defense for this book pretty well: "This book is certainly not for the conventional, "goody goody" reader; it is for those who like psychological thrillers, mystery and revolutionary prose. Pedophiles are never the traditional subject matter for stories, but maybe that's why this book will never shed its notorious fame and impact." It promotes very adult themes that can make most people uncomfortable, and aren't exactly enjoyable- it's meant to horrify you. It consists of beautiful writing with a very, very dark undertone, which is why some people praise it. I do think it should be preserved and studied, but I do worry that it could encourage the wrong people that their thoughts and actions are "normal". However, this book isn't exactly popular. I hadn't even heard of it until up about a year ago, and I've never seen it in any bookstores.
