I learned the Common Core standards only reach to math and ELA. This made me reflect upon my own experience in high school in Kentucky. At my school, we were not required to take science and social studies every year; we were only required to earn the three credits of each required by the state. There are definitely pros and cons to the fact science and social studies are not included in these standards. Common Core incentivizes states away from teaching these subjects well, which is a shame. However, placing less rigorous standards upon these subjects allows states and schools more independence in teaching these subjects. For example, schools in Kentucky might choose to teach units about plants and animals in Kentucky or the history of Kentucky, neither of which would be included in national standards.
