How is Holden stuck between being a child and being an adult? Consider all aspects of characterization: physical appearance, actions, what he says, how he interacts with other characters, what other characters say about him. Give evidence and briefly discuss.

In Chapter 19 page 158 Holden says " I stood up when I ordered them so they could see how tall I was and not think im a goddamn minor" This piece of evidence shows that he really is a child but he has the physical characteristics of an adult. So he fits in with having the mind of a young person yet can be treated as an adult depending on who he is around.

""at the end of the bar. Don't look now, I been saving him for you" Chapter 19 (159)
Holden is stuck between being an adult and remaining a child because even though he goes out to bars and drink, whenever he has conversations with others he tends to talk about inappropriate and childish subjects.

Chapter 19 Pg 161 "You could tell he didn't feel like discussing anything serious with me." This is when Holden is talking to Luce and Luce doesn't really want to talk anything serious with Holden. Luce does not think Holden is a mature adult yet to talk about these certain things. This shows how Holden is seen as a child but he is slowly turning into an adult.

"The waiter came up, and I ordered a Coke for her- she didn't drink- and a scotch and soda for myself, but the sonuvabitch wouldn't bring me one, so I had a Coke, too." Chapter 17 pg 144. This shows that Holden tries to act more mature like an adult by ordering an alcoholic beverage, but still has the physical appearance and age of a minor which is why the waiter treats him as one.

"Who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody" (Salinger 172) This shows that Holden is between an adult and a child because he is putting more thought into things showing that he is becoming more adult but at the same time he is being very naive when he thinks that the flowers are for the dead because people really put flowers by a grave as a sign of remembrance showing that they still put the effort into caring for the person even though they are gone

While Holden was at the bar with Luce, casually hanging out and catching up, Holden begins to ask questions about Luce's sex life. Luce refused to answer most questions because he has matured and did not want to have a personal conversation in a bar. However, Holden "was getting excited and [he] was talking a little too loud"(Salinger 162). Holden is sitting a bar, drinking like any adult would, trying to have a conversation about sex. Most children do not know what sex is, however, Holden's persistence indicates that he wants to know all of the details from Luce. Holden's habit of gossiping labels him immature, like most children. However, the subject and setting indicates that he is also attempting to act like an adult.

The only thing he ever did, though, was give these sex talks and all, late at night when there was a bunch of guys in his room". This shows the young scholar side of Holden but you See how he is more like an adult because he is talking about sex with a grown man.
