During our past practice session, we decided to drop in to observe our colleagues doing CFUs in their own classrooms. Our TLAC team created a template for teachers to record how many and what type of CFUs they observed. After our observations, we came back together to discuss what we saw and highlight some "bright spots." It was really great to see "live" CFUs and to celebrate our colleagues; everyone really enjoyed dropping in on other teachers and talking about the great CFUs that they were seeing. In the future, I would like to actually include more time for observation since it seemed to be extremely useful and meaningful for the other teachers on my campus!

During our last practice session we continued to focus on the principal, no warnings and started to add in no opt out. For us, it was really beneficial to practice giving our students redirection without interrupting the flow of the learning environment. In terms of no opt out, this is something we truly need to push on our campus. During the last practice session we did not get to fully practice holding students accountable and pushing them to generate the answer before 'opting out'. This will be something we continue to work on as we want to increase not only student participation and accountability, but the sense of urgency on campus! (Picture to come!)

I made a handout that helped explain everything and at the end I shared which piece I really need to work on ( witholding the answer) and which pieces I have already improved on ( showing my tell). This got the conversation going and everyone started sharing about which piece they do well and how they do it, and how they plan to improve. One thing I wish would have going better is practicing our "tell". The teachers aren't quite comfortable with the practice sessions yet.

In our last TLAC session we focused on cold call and call and response. It was exciting to see how many people feel that incorporating these techniques in their daily instruction will be both beneficial and easy to do. We found that our group was eager to take these two techniques and run with them for the upcoming week. Next week we will try to have more time to practice with one another, so that we build confidence and it becomes automatic in our presentation.

We discuss that some time especially themath teacher (I’m guilty) we accept the students tell us just a number as answer instead of an answer in complete sentence. We play role as students and teacher to model the technique, also discuss how to help the ELLs students to be part of this. Example, provide the words to start the sentence: "How many dogs are there?" "Six." "There are . . ." "There are six dogs." Provide a reminder in the question: "Who can tell me in a complete sentence how many dogs are left? Provide a simple, direct prompt after the question: "How many dogs are left?" "Six." "Complete sentence, please?"

My current cohort is comprised of new teachers. Therefore, during our last practice session, we focused on setting a good threshold routine. First, we talked about the importance of setting a positive tone for the class period and how having a good threshold routine could help the teacher connect with their students. During practice one of the new teachers, Mr. Waters, asked me to observe him practicing his threshold routine with his students. Mr. Waters, reports he has noticed a change in his students just by making the simple and brief contact with students as they entered the room.

We discussed how useless it is to teach to a room full of students if no one is actually listening to you. I taught my team how to make anonymous individual corrections so that we are the least invasive with our intervention. In this way we can continue to teach without skipping a beat. We also watched clips showing lots of nonverbal intervention and I asked my team to try and point out all the times hand signals were used rather than interrupting the momentum of the lesson. Then we brainstormed age approprate hand signals we could use with our own students to make sure 100% are on track. Next time, I would like to spend even more time practicing!

During this week practice session, my cohort practiced
different ways to use Check For Understanding techniques in their classroom
such as hand signals, cold call, circulate and exit tickets. By using hand
signals, cold call and circulate, our teachers are able to see if students have
mastery what is being taught and what needs to be re-teach. One of the main
issues teachers in my cohort were having problems with is utilizing exit
tickets to assess student progress. After discussion about exit tickets, teachers
decided to shorten the exit tickets and give students a stem to work with
therefore, students could finish the exit ticket faster and the teacher could
review the exit tickets daily.

Our school focus this year has been to check for understanding. So the 8th grade TLAC Coaches have decided to to the do following focus in collaboration with the 8th grade Dean for the 2013-2014 school year...practice , be persistant and reflective of the best practices. We have watched the TLAC videos in both small goups (weekly cohorts) and as a faculty on early dismissal days. We have practiced in both arenas. The 8th Grade Dean and the school principal has made this their focus, so the 8th grade TLAC Leaders asked the cohort members to show the variuos ways that they check for understanding. Then as a team we decided which new techniques that we would pratice and then adopt for our room. The rationale is to show consistancy and uniformity in the way that the 8th grade team checks for understanding. Each person is required to tell how effective their technique is and the best way to implement it. The Dean also likes to show how the strategy alignes with the district's initiative and appraisal system. It is actually fun and a great way to learn from your peers and not have to reinvent the wheel :)

One of the members was sharing some concerns about a student and we revisited this technique to demonstrate how to address the issue. One thing I would keep is the cohesiveness of the cohort, we often work together to offer advice and lend a hand to each other. Something that I would do differently as a teacher leader is be more firm about meeting times and practices, often I make several last minute adjustments to allow for others' schedules and as this practice demonstrated, someone misses need information.
