Mary is wearing a gold-bordered blue mantle set on top of a red dress, with her left leg reaching diagonally to enhance the idea of her supporting Jesus. The blue color symbolizes the Church, and the red, Christ's death. Moreover, the picture of Madonna touching hands with Christ symbolizes the connection between Mother Church and Christ's sacrifice. John the Baptist, is supposed to have recognized and worshipped Christ as the Reedemer even in their childhood. Raphael makes this clear by letting Christ take the cross from John. Behind the central figures, three poppies bloom to represent Christ's passion, death and ressurection. The painting was executed bye 23 year old Raphael, within months of his 1504-1505 arrival in Florence.
