         <description><![CDATA[<div>1) What impact did geography have on the development of the American colonies?<br>It led to a variety of economic differences between northern, middle, and southern colonies. This is shown by the vast amounts of fertile land in the south allowing the cultivation of cash crops on plantations. The middle colonies had smaller farms and relied on mostly fur trade. The northern colonies relied heavily on ship building and fishing.<br><br>2) During the Colonial Era, economic development in southern colonies such as South Carolina was dependent on what factor?<br>The use of African slaves as an inexpensive labor force.<br>This is correct because there was large amounts of fertile land for farming cash crops. Plantation owners couldn't afford enough indentured servants to help cultivate the crops, so they resorted to slavery and forced labor to bring down the cost of growing large amounts of crops.</div>]]></description>
