By Sonia Rojas: One thing that I learned from the electronic brochure is mandated reporters must report child abuse or neglect. I learned if I suspect that a child's health or safety is jeopardized due to abuse or neglect by their parents or another care taker who has custody of the child, then I must contact the child protective agency in my county. I can also contact the police or county sheriff. This information is useful for me as a future teacher because I will know what to do in case I suspect child abuse or neglect in my classroom.

Some of this is common sense but is fairly vague which makes me more than a little weary. So are homeless people by definition guilty of child abuse? Is a family that uses corporal punishment guilty of child abuse? (Corporal punishment is legal for parents and guardians to use.)

There are severe consequences for mandated reporters who do not do their job correctly which is why there is such extensive training for every reporter. There are multiple types of mandated reporters and there are so many signs to look for in a child who is being neglected or abused. A child could be underweight, bruised, dirty, scared, show poor behaviors and the list goes on. There are so many signs that were talked about that I didn't realize were signs of a neglected or abused child. This is why being a mandated reporter is important. They speak for a child who cannot understand or cannot speak about what is happening to them

One thing that I found interesting is that the State of California provides immunity from prosecution when making a report. Also, people who are not mandated reporters are actually able to make reports anonymously while people who are mandated reporters must identify themselves. I find it intersteing that we have to identify ourselves while people who are not mandated reporters can either be anonymous or have their information available. It is reassuring that we are protected when it comes to make a report.

Reading this electronic brochure was very helpful because I learned that as a mandated reporter you must fill out a written SCAR within the 36 hours of finding out the information of the child. I think it's important to add that as a mandated reporter you should never try to investigate more about the child's abuse on your own.
